Hi

I've just been to the post office to collect a signed for letter and lo, it was a speeding fine from Italy in June 2018, 120 in a 90 (obvs I missed the sign as limits are either 90 or 120 on that road ) in my own vehicle.

What happens If I don't pay? Issues going to Italy again in the future?

These threads are coming up more and more often. Deciding whether to pay what you owe, based on the likely consequences is not an honourable thing to do. What will definitely happen, if you don't pay, is you and everyone who finds out about this will know you think its OK to not pay what you owe. Hopefully you will be cool about that when people don't pay you.

Did you just quote and then agree with yourself? I think we have a split personality over here.

But who is to say what you owe? Just because they demand it does not mean you owe it. I have written a law that in my computer says that if I detect the word "Graveworm" using my web browser, then the person who caused that word to appear owes me €500. That means that you owe me, according to my law. Only I'm pretty sure you will decline to pay because you will feel the charge is unfair, that my law doesn't apply to you and because you believe that the chances of me coming after you are slim. I hate to imagine what people now think of you, now that they know you're not paying me the €500 you owe me.

I’m not sure I said I wasn’t going to pay so it’s probably best to get off your high horse

I asked what would happen if I didn’t

I replied to a almost identical thread two days ago. If you don't pay nothing happens. It certainly didn't to me. Mine was Pisa, driving up a restricted road. I also had a speeding ticket where I paid the car rental fee but not the ticket. Both were issued from local communes . I'm not sure their systems are that well joined up. I used to live in Italy and what I saw day to day backs this sentiment up.

P.s. graveworm - do you have a bowl of miserable with your cofee every morning ? Your posts all over this board seem to follow a theme....

Thank you I have looked and I see a theme as well and I may well be pushing too hard. I will try not to be too repetitive in the future.

I like to think I am a happy person. I was raised to be honest and honourable, this includes paying my debts, it doesn't make me miserable.

If someone honestly thinks they don't owe the money then of course they should satisfy themselves that they do owe the money, and I will happily include all the legal loopholes that exist. But that is not the same as only doing the right thing to avoid the consequences.

The OP has pointed out that this was not necessarily their intention so, of course, I apologise for my assumption and the tone of my reply.

I also accept that sometimes the opposite is true and I have paid money that I didn't think I fell to pay for expediency.

As a possibly relevant aside. There were a string of kidnaps in the 90's and early 00's of Chinese nationals in the UK. These were over disputed debts, it confused us for a long time as we couldn't understand why they would often be released with no money having been paid.
Equally puzzling even to me was the idea that they would undergo torture just to avoid admitting they owed the disputed money. All they had to do to be released was just say they owed X or some third party agreeing to honour the debt.
The reason for this was that, once they agreed to pay, then it was inconceivable they wouldn't. That is extreme but such honour exists in many societies and it used to across much more of ours, in many ways we are poorer for it's decline.

In a similar vein I often see I was doing X for reason Y and I am worried about the consequences. They are often a number of responses which either indicate that "What if it were for reason Z" or even just say it was for that reason. That is dishonest and personally I value that along with integrity highly. There seems to be lot less doing "The right thing" and far more, there is no law that says I have to or may not.

I think that's an understatement, given the amount of tickets issued (many dubiously) and the infamous 'efficiency' of Italian society I would (and have) ignore it and I, too say that as someone who lived and has worked there for many years.

You won't be waking up with a a horse's head in your bed...
