Double cab pickup recommendations for £5k
Discussion
Hi guys, looking for a cheapish used double cab pickup.
For a bit of history I've been renovating a house and the amount of stuff I've had to haul about has been unreal, been using the other halfs VW Tiguan but its getting to the point of absurdity with what I've crammed in there. We are about finished with the house and will be looking at doing more in the future, which is a sideline to my actual job.
I've had to travel abroad with work for a few months and sold my BMW E60 saloon before going so the truck will be my only 4 wheeled vehicle and am looking at my.options for when I get back. My actual job is pretty ordinary with no particular vehicular requirements apart from commuting 60 miles each way a few times a week.
I've so recently had an addition to the family so whilst I don't need any particular mod cons reasonable comfort would be good. This is the reason I'm not going for a small van. Have looked PCH on a new pickup but it's just too much for me right now.
So basically I'm looking for something with a reputation for reliability, double cab, reasonable MPG (40+ would be great), and under £5K. Theres a lot out there so.if anyone has any recommendations it will be much appreciated!

40 mpg and under £5k = none that I can think off.
A good Mk2 or Mk3 Ranger could be found in that price bracket. A Mk3 would probably be highish miles and might manage 30 mpg.
They're great trucks and I bought my Mk2 seven years ago with 130,000 miles and so far has cost me only basic servicing. Now on 165,000 and doing great - I'd happily have another.
Old IDI diesel though only does about 25 mpg.

OP. Have you thought about a trailer instead? I’ve been building a house since April/ May time. Bought a large trailer no smaller than a truck bed for moving stuff about, had a 1000 litre IBC on it, plasterboard, lengths of timber, drain pipe. All sorts.
If you don’t load it beyond 750kg thenyou wont need the trailer test either.
Biggest pain is storage but then biggest boon is you get car comfort and economy when not towing

Literally no space for a trailer unfortunately. If you don’t load it beyond 750kg thenyou wont need the trailer test either.

Rangers look decent enough, any particular models to look out for?
A circa 2010 Nissan Navara fits in my budget- any good?
Im looking for a pickup to tow a trailer instead of using my transit dropside and also running a car. For something that drives well and not too agriculturally, it would have to be a D40 Navara at that price point.
D40 Navara - I like them, they drive well, look nice and a fairly comfy. Neglected examples suffer with blown head gaskets/overheating. Make sure the chassis has been inspected as they can split where the loadbed meets the cab.
Hilux - Your budget will get a leggy 06/07plate. 170/180k, but they are very durable.
Ranger/Mazda BT50 - Quite agricultural to drive, but dependable.

The Navara D40 is a nice looking truck and Nissan were always ahead of the curve for power and torque.Rangers look decent enough, any particular models to look out for?

BUT there are a number of issues affecting many of the D40's.
The most recent problem was the chassis snapping in half - so much negative publicity that Nissan eventually had to buy back the affected trucks or offer mad discounts on later versions.
The MK3 Ranger / BT50 are excellent but as noted are more agricultural. They are extremely dependable although the MK3 can suffer with transmission issues due to some incredibly daft gearing. This was cured on the Mk4 with revised ratios and Mk4 'boxes are a retro swap.
As others have pointed out Navara's in you price bracket have the potential for a number of issues so do your homework.
I'd say either the 3.0d Ford Ranger in Wildtrack or XLT Thunder trim:

Or my other pick would be an Isuzu Rodeo 3.0d they're hard to find but worth seeking out:

It's the plated weight of the trailer that needs to be under 750kg. You can' have an F off triaxle Ifor Williams and just put a couple of door frames on it.
The trouble with crew cab pickups is that the beds are so small as to be almost useless.

Yeah, double cab pickups aren't really much use for typical house renovation stuff. I like them and will be buying a Hilux at some point but they're not nearly as practical as is often made out unless you need the off road ability, it obviously depends on what you're doing but you really want something that can carry 8x4 sheets and decent lengths of timber. Almost any van will be as good to drive and be more practical than the age of pickups you're looking at.
It really is a shame you've nowhere for a trailer, they hold their value well, cost almost nothing to maintain and are much more flexible than even a big van. We've got an 10x6 ifor with sides/cage/cover and carry everything from loose quarry aggregate to whole pallets of plasterboard to furniture. Best thing we've ever bought.

Unless you need to tow, off-road or carry small filthy loads pickups can be a pain.
I drove and passengered in a few rangers , great for what they were but...
The rear seats were the most uncomfortable I'd ever been in . Even a 6 hour trip in the back of a Dawoo matiz was more comfy than the bk of a ranger . They are also small and crampt in the cab
As stated load bay is quite small but handy for filthy outdoor bits.
I'm not knocking them but they were a bit of a pain.
I'd be tempted to buy a van and sell it for nearly what you paid when done .
