Evening,

Told a couple of associates I’ll take them for the best steak they’ve ever had whilst in London on Monday night.

I’m going to be in the Covent Garden area...

What do you recommend - no budget constraints.

The only places I’ve had steak in town are:

- Flat Iron: Was great for the money.
- Goodmans: popped into the Canary Wharf branch last year and had a cracking fillet.

I’ve seen this Hawkmoor place advertised? Any good?

So

No budget constraint - Cut at 45 Park Lane imo is hard to beat. Not Covent garden though obviously but not really far either.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Another criteria to help narrow down is atmosphere.

Whilst I’m after a good steak I’m also after a relaxed vibe where we’re comfortable to just have a few beers - they’re pretty young and we won’t be raiding the wine cellar. Would this help sway the decision?

Goodman is a personal favourite of mine and I've been to Gaucho and Hawksmoor a few times. Nothing beats Goodman in my view for the quality of the meat itself and usually go to the one in the City where the vibe is quite relaxed, as opposed to the dark and dingy or a bit gaudy for Hawksmoor or Gaucho. Some I know prefer Hawksmoor and others Gaucho but I've never had anyone say that the steak at Goodman isn't great. They've got a couple of drinks on tap so maybe that helps?

Last time I went to Hawksmoor and asked for a burger medium rare I was told I couldn't because of rules prohibiting them as the burgers weren't prepared onsite. I'm sure that's not the case with the steaks but I don't think the quality of their meat is as good as Goodman. Goodman also offer some great cuts on the board and I usually for the big T-Bone. Corn fed USDA is great and so is the Scottish grass fed. I've never felt let down there and I must have gone over a 100 times and spent a tonne on steaks and whiskeys.

MASH I didn't like much and me and my steak buddy were in agreement.

Temper is excellent but not such a relaxed vibe. More for good cuts of all kinds of meat rather than steak only but excellent food if you like fatty cuts - I love those personally but understand not to everyone's liking. Plus plenty of watering holes nearby so you could always go for the food after walking around Soho.

Flat Iron is decent and they do aged steaks. They have some very good options for sides and have a couple of nice beers on the menu as best as I recall.

Let us know if you had steak somewhere else and how you get on.

I rate the Hixter/tramshed steakhouses, should fit the relaxed vibe.

Might stick with what I know and just do Goodman.

The piece of fillet I had there last year was amongst some of the best meat I’ve eaten - as you have said.

Plus everything else was pretty handy too - although I did not enjoy the truffle chips!

In Covent Gardens you can’t beat Hawksmoore imo, otherwise I’d head over to the old Hipperdrome Casino, the steak restaurant is fantastic...

Boisedale in Mayfair does some of the best steaks I have had in London. Not in Covent Garden but definitely worth the trip...

Hawksmoor...... brilliant. It's tried and tested and never fails to impress. I prefer the Air Street one, but the one near 7 dials its fine I just find it can be a bit noisy in there. They do a really nice beer style cocktail called Shaky Pete which is lovely.... or they do one called the Zombie if you want to get your collegues fked up :-)

Blacklock.... also brilliant. I had one of the best porterhouse steaks I have ever eaten there a few weeks ago. Slightly more casual dining experience compared to Hawkers.

Gaucho Piccadilly or Hawksmoor Air Street are my go to’s.

Hawksmoor for more British cuts and sides with French wine, Gaucho for different South American cuts, sides and of course the Malbec’s. Both are grass fed beef, which I think is the best.
