One for the farmers on here.

Let me start by saying this isn't a moan, it really doesn't bother me, I always have broken sleep anyway even when nothing disturbs me, it's just curiosity on my part.

I live in a very rural area, which is almost entirely livestock grazing, no arable.

I can understand during the summer months when there's silaging to be done why tractors would be running through the night, but what would they be doing operating at night in the middle of winter?

The odd thing thing is they don't seem to be running in the evening or early part of the night (unless I just don't notice them?) but seem to start going past in the early hours from about 1 a.m onward?!

Tractors get used for all sort of activities besides good old fashioned agricultural fieldwork. They often run bulk trailers carrying fruit or vegetables outside of the normal picking season. They are also used by plant companies and in forestry. Now they have a decent road speed they often end up doing stuff that was formerly done with lorries, often with dubious legality.

When I lived in Hereford I often saw tractor drawn 14 ton apple trailers going to Bulmers Cider at 2 in the morning.

Almost certainly slurry spreading onto the fields whilst they’re frozen.

All the tractors that passed my house this morning were pulling huge slurry injection tankers, like this.

Loving the replies!

Definitely not gritting or transporting fruit, not stolen unless they're just joyriding as I was hearing them go past every 20 minutes or so!

Sometimes it's intense activity like this, other nights I'll hear just the odd random tractor go past in the early hours.

I suppose they could be muck spreading, although the ground isn't frozen here so not sure why they'd need to do it at night?

Our garden backs on to several hundred acres of farm which also is (after two houses) to our right as well. Every year they run for about a week, 24/7 ploughing/sewing/whatever it is they do. Massive spotlights on them etc..and plenty of noise. Just part of country life I guess.

Tractors at night, farmer's delight

Tractors in the morning, bloody annoying if you get stuck behind one on the way to work.
