Hi

I currently have a 14 plate Mini Cooper SD with a stage 1 remap. Has around 225bhp and does 0-60 in about 6 seconds.

Went to look at a 125d yesterday but that had sold but they showed me an Audi A6 3.0 TDI which was very nice and with a remap would have 255bhp and do 0-60 in about the same time as the Mini.

Me being stupid didn’t realise Audi’s are FWD and the problem I’m having with the Mini is that it’s not putting the down down to the floor unless the floor is bone dry. I’m worried the same would happen to the Audi.

Would I be better off looking at a 320 or 120/125 as they are RWD ? Or would the Audi be able to put the extra power down ?

Hope that makes sense ? Any advice welcome as I have no idea

Could you find a suitable Audi Quattro?

Not for same price and spec

Both cars are manuals as well if that makes any difference

I have an A4 2 litre TDI ultra so about 190 ps I think and I get wheel spin on the hankocks they put on it when bought. I love my car. It's superb up and down the motorways and fun on bendy roads but it's not like a 3 series when the roads get bendy. Can have more fun with rwd.

My next car will be Quattro if I go with Audi and would consider X drive on a BMW.

Not an expert so perhaps better tyres would sort it.

You could take some lead out of your right foot..... alternatively buy something with more power that doesn’t need a remap.

That was my plan with the 125d

Though I was hoping the Audi would be sufficiently heavy and have enough torque that the remap wouldn’t just cause ridiculous wheel spin when the ground was even slightly damp

The A6 is a big heavy car, going from a Mini to the A6 is going to lead to disappointment, Audis have weak clutches too so a remap is only going to bring clutch slip on much quicker.

Your better off looking for a 1 series, you could try an A3 quattro which is much closer to the 1 Series or it might be worth trying a Focus ST, have you considered a petrol ?

It felt nice on the test drive but definitely would want to remap so thank you for letting me know about the clutch problems.

I’m looking German generally so wouldn’t go for a Focus.

Have looked at 320i and 120i which both look good but I do fancy a saloon so maybe a 320i is the way to go ?

I’ve owned four A6’s in the past and the difference is tyres. Put some Michelins on it and that should be fine, it’s no substitute for RWD though, but definitely lessens the wheelspin. FWD is massively better in the snow as well imo. Perhaps cross climates would work better but I’ve not tried them.

Never had issues with clutches btw. Is definitely more luxurious long distance travel limo than sports car but s-line sports suspension should help.

Unless your looking at an F series 320i the E series 320i should be avoided, its so sloooooow. The Mondeo is worth a look if you want something slightly bigger, The germans are not exactly reliable.

I have an Audi 3.0 Tdi Quattro tip, it’s a 2011 and does like a drink. It’s been mapped to 300bhp and it does shift but it’s soo smooth you don’t really notice it. Above 100 it is a immense and could easily do 150 plus. I drove from Edinburgh to Cambridge in 5hr 30 mins without a stop and averaged 40mpg. Around town you could get mid 20’s

The grip from the 4wd is awesome and in any weather it is hard to get any form of wheel spin.

Very good motors - very comfy motorway cruisers that lap up the miles no problem.
