The UK produces a similar number today of cars as it always did, somewhere around 2 million. In terms of output, the decline in manufacturing has been greatly exaggerated. But where the "traditional" manufacturing and other industry has declined, it has often been dramatic and catastrophic in terms of employment. Also, most of the current producers are foreign owned.
