I was helping a relative change the front suspension upper arms and anti-roll bar links on a VW Passat (B5.5). It occurred to me afterwards that it might have made sense to tighten the clamp bolts on the rubber bushes when the arms are in their 'weight on wheels' position, rather than with the car jacked up and wheels off, as the rubber would then be less stressed in normal use.

Any thoughts?

Yes. That's the correct way to do it.

^^^ That. If you've clamped the bushes so that they are twisted at the normal ride height, you should release and retighten them with weight on the suspension.

It depends whether they are designed to slip or twist, only you can answer that as the person on the job.
I've seen both types.
