6k warm/hot hatch.
Discussion
Hi, I'm shopping around for a new car at the moment - just wondering what your opinions were.
I'm looking within 6k for a warm/hot hatchback, I'm only 18 years old so insurance may be a slight issue. I like the look of the Ibiza fr's, 1.4 cupras, abarth puntos, just wondering if you had any previous experiences of these cars / engines such as the 1.4 TSI VAG engines and it's reliability. Any recommendations would be good!
Cheers

I'd say that you'll be wanting a car that's at a maximum insurance group 20.

Is the 6k to pay the insurance or buy the car with
You speak the truth... Coming into my second year and it's £600 for a 1.0 Corsa without a black box! Although I'm not too worried about having the black box as it's not too much of an issue as it's not a great idea to speed anyway, hence asking the question ☺️

Polo blueGT? Fabia vrs? I think they both use the same 1.4TSI engine as the Seats.
What about a BMW 125i?
BlueGT is up my street but maybe a tad too expensive. I've heard some slight dodgy things about the 1.4 tsi in the fabia (may also be in the police but not sure of that) which slightly puts me off. Despite this, you only hear the bad stuff when you Google search so I may be wrong! What about a BMW 125i?
The 125i is also nice, but how risky would it be picking up a high mileage one as they are at the top end of my price range. The thing is, I could open my options much further but I'm not sure if an older car, with quite low mileage and good service history will be reliable? I take good care of my car but at the end of the day I'm not sure how much age is a factor with stuff going wrong on it.
How long do you expect to keep the car? Dropping 6k on something for a year because you will want something faster/can sfford to insure something better seems unnecessary to me when there are plenty of fun cars for half or less of your budget.
Don't worry so much about reliability to. Plenty of 20year old cars with +150k that Id daily

I would avoid the 1.4tsi engine in twin charge guise, a colleague of mine spent 3-4k on fixing his scirocco with the same engine but manual gearbox... Lots of horror stories out there.
My choice would be a swift sport mk2, abarth 500 (bit girly for some) or maybe a clip 200, which would cost a bit more to run. The Civic type s is also a good shout but not quite so 'hot' in driving terms, good spec on the 1.8 GT models.

I expect to keep it for atleast 2-3+ years. I want to be good with my money and get something that's truly worth it. I don't mind taking the hit with a black box for a year which should bring my insurance down, as anything around £800 to insure I'm happy with. But I would like to use it as a stepping stone to something more after a few years, so something that wouldn't depreciate tooooo much would be preferable - maybe something such as a BMW 120d or Audi A3? I might be completely wrong though!Don't worry so much about reliability to. Plenty of 20year old cars with +150k that Id daily

In my opinion, "something that's truly worth it" is vague as that's a personal thing, you seem to value a 120d or A3 where as to me those are about as generic as you can possibly get & too often driven by people who like them for what they represent rather than what they do. From recent experience working with some younger <21 guys & girls I am somewhat disappointed by their obsessions with having the newest poxy little diesel engined car they can "afford" and then whine that cars cost money - don't be the kid who goes an buys a car with all his cash an then can't afford any repairs/maintenance on it or has to drive around with barely 2L of fuel in it until pay day!
Honestly, I accept I may be out of touch with young peoples insurance costs but I think you need to run a LOT more insurance quotes on older more interesting cars without a black box, and perhaps consider spending a lot less of your £6k budget an trading up within a year to something more fun/faster again without taking a depreciation hit.
This is PH after all and I cannot believe we have got so far into a discussion without someone saying "BUY AN MX5" but in this case as a 18 year old presumably with no kids/doesn't ferry all their mates around as "designated driver" then now is the best time to get a 2 seater !!!!!!
Op do you have to have a black box this year? If so it’s pointless getting a hot or warm hatch as you can’t drive it like it’s designed for. You may as well save the petrol and tax and get something sporty looking but eco. The 1.0 eco pop fez is a good shout. The ST line looks the part too.
