Fecking hell. Considering a new bike (Honda x-adv) and my current Ducati 821 cost is about £550 the Honda will be 960 tpf&t or 1240 fully comp. so twice the price for half as slow. Yeah I know nickabily but it seems we just pay through the nose forever

What the fk. Middle aged git. Alright ish postcode. fks sake

That's because the scooter you want to buy has already crashed into an African twin.

I just had a renewal from Carole Nash for one of my 50's bikes. £380! Taking the fking piss or what!

Have gone through the owners club recommended insurance and it's £140, did a confused quote and the cheapest was £68. going to be ringing Carole in a bit and tell them to shove it.

My condolences to the OP, that is a SAVAGE quote.

Really no suprise is it being in London OP. After being a**raped by the insurance companies for living in East London for 18 years, including one (amazingly only one) theft. I finally got my own back with my Speed Triple now I'm in Hampshire with a garage £86 for the year! Mother f**kers.. postcode/garage the only thing changed, me the same, commuting and pillions still switched on, bike the same/similar value still.
After I moved MCE refunded me almost £100 on my previous London premium.

I'm not gloating.. I'm just on my claimback premiums wise from now on based on the £1000s I've spent over all that time in London.

I saw some stats recently that indicated that in any given year 1 in 7 bikes in London was stolen, so I'd not be too keen on underwriting a risk like that.

Some bikes must be horrendous risks though - we have a pair of R1s, one a 1999 and one a 2017.

Me and Mrs DS are named riders on each one, max ncb etc etc. All mileage, commuting etc is the same on each bike. '99 bike is 98 fully comp, the '17 bike is an eye watering £500. I'm 51 and that is nuts, but it's the way it is.

Once the theft had timed out over 5 years (2005-2010) I was able to get half reasonable quotes for my bikes up to 2018 renewal time. But then reasonable for myself in east london ungaraged was around the £400 to £500 mark. Last year my speed triple was about £400 at my old london address and only MCE would give me a premium that cheap.. massive massive excess of £1100. Next best was circa £700 and then £800+ Many refuses to quotes from the main brokers/companys too.

the massive excess situation is a joke, on a multi bike policy last year I had a cheap commuter bike and valuable bike on the same policy, which means the excess (£900) was nearly twice the value of the cheap commuter (£500), effectively the fully comp was a 3rd party only policy as you wold never bother claiming for anything. The option of separating the policy was also more expensive than the value of the bike as you have to put the NCB on the expensive one.

That's just MCE for you. I wouldn't insure with them at all, unless I was after TPO cover, which is effectively what you are getting. I suspect getting a payout off them might be difficult.

But I only chose MCE because I had zero other choice for a 'reasonable' premium living in London still last year. Many have given them business for the same reasons.
I'm back with Bennetts as of next week when the new policy kicks in - they told me to go away and wouldn't offer a renewal quote this time last year!

In my (admittedly limited) experience, they’re actually far better than their reputation suggests if you need to claim.

I’m with them for the same reason as many - they undercut every other quote by a significant margin - and when I had to make a theft claim they handled it pretty smoothly. Maybe took a little longer than I would have liked, but not excessively so, and they were very fair and good to deal with. I was pleasantly surprised!

That said, now I have a theft claim on my record, they’re not as cheap as they once were......!

My renewal just came through, £445 to £783. Love the bike, it used to be my happy place, but can't take the agro of using the roads much more with the relentless lowering of limits, traffic calming and enforcement and if it did get nicked I'd never see it again, so it might be time to get rid of it. Had the car broken into over Christmas, the police were't interested, they were very interested when I triggered a speed camera that was also a red light camera 370 days earlier.
