From Monday 28th January 2019. Merseyside police are installing new speed cameras at various junctions across the region. Aimed primarily at red light jumping, they also record speed regardless of colour, so if you’re over the speed limit when lights on green or Amber you’ll get a ticket.
Not sure if using the existing fixed camera sites or are brand new ones. Website says being rolled out in Sefton first, link on the MerPol twitter feed.

It’ll catch everyone who speeds up to make Amber.

Possibly there’ll be people getting rear ended all over the place?

Interesting.

It makes sense from an efficiency perspective, it doesn't help with the justification for the siting of speed cameras and takes them even further from their original purpose.
But given the resources, just because they can detect and prosecute speeders, it will remain that they are unlikely to in many cases.

Should anybody really be approaching traffic lights at excessive speed in the first place?

No nor anywhere.
Going through green lights though is relatively safe.
If speed cameras make sense then it makes sense to put them where they should do most good.
They have always claimed that is the case. These are being sited purely on the basis we are already putting a camera there anyway. That could divert resources from the ones that have apparently some science behind them.

Good move for me. Too many people speeding through red lights. Its almost as if they have committed themselves 500 yards back and go through regardless of how long its been red.

These cameras are all over London already.

I don't necessarily mind them, although it would be great if they installed more red light camera's - as a motorbike commuter I am nearly taken out at least twice a week by people going though red lights (mainly on right turn filter lights) despite not rushing when pulling off when my lights turn green....

They do a good job of stopping the A205 from Streatham Hill toward Clapham from having wildly different traffic speeds - for e.g. you used to have some 30mph traffic with others braking from 70 to cut in at the right hand turn. It was a mess. You still get The Entitled trying to bully their way in, but without the additional kinetic element to worry about.

How much will this cost and who's paying?

I suspect motoring offences of the kind this will prevent is through the roof, otherwise, they might have diverted the funds to more 'worthy causes' like preventing knife crime or similar.

These are the only speed cameras I think are a good idea.

They have changed drivers habits in London. We now slow down on an amber rather than speed up.

Just being honest.

I'm all for it though I've nearly been rear ended quite often by slowing down once over the amber by the cars following behind me having gone through red, it's why I have both front and rear dashcams in all my cars.

Should be very profitable.

Install traffic lights to 'manage' traffic flow, which in reality just hold everyone up, then penalize them for trying to squeeze though before they go red.

ker ching.

It all makes no sense, if you want people to stop speading just hide all the cameras, have mobile cameras in horse boxes and builders vans. People then have no choice as you just dont know.

Simples.

What is the penalty for going through a red light these days. is it 3 points and £100?

A friends wife has just been caught and he reckons it's £100 no points, plus someone was telling him to send the form back with a ficticious name and address and to not sign the paperwork and the problem wil go away

But if they squeeze through before they go red then they won't get a ticket, and if the traffic flow is "holding everyone up" then they can't get popped for speeding. Might be you need to spend a little more time on the thinking side of things.

I don't like to get into fights with random strangers but perhaps it is you that needs to do some thinking. The camera's will catch you when the light is orange. Orange comes before red so yes , it will get you as you try to sneak through BEFORE it goes red.

There are lights round here that only allow three or four cars through at a time and if you miss the light you sit there for a few minutes so of course people will speed up a bit and try and make it through the light. It is human nature. By the way, there isn't usually any traffic at these traffic lights, you come round a corner and see the lights is on green and 'step on it' so you get there before it goes red.

I would love to know how many accidents are caused by people doing this, I bet the number is ridiculously low.

The cameras don't work like that.

Image 1 will be the vehicle crossing the stop line when the light is red.

Image 2 will show the vehicle proceeding across the junction.

Oh, and it's amber. No such thing as orange lights.
