Ateca/Karoq 1.5tsi
Discussion
Considering one of these to replace a 1.4 ACT Leon, which has been excellent.
Interested to hear feedback on both of these and the 1.5 TSI engine, and any comparison to the old 1.4act would be good to hear.
Both seem to offer similar spec/price point, although the Karoq has more options available whereas the it seems with the Ateca, you chose the spec and then no additions, which isn't a big deal.
The Karoq on paper is slower and less economical than the Karoq, which seems odd as they appear to be basically the same car with same engine and gearbox. Why is this?
So what are the like to live with, any issues?

There's a big thread about the 1.5 TSI engine on Briskoda:

Mrs GP drives a Karoq 1.5TSi in SE L spec and it's our family car so I drive it at weekends. We got it back in May last year and were one of the first customers to have it delivered. The only options over and above the SE L spec (which is pretty good IMO with decent nav/infotainment and heated seats) was an electric tailgate, rear ipad holders and a boot mat. It replaced our diesel Skoda Octavia VRS estate which was 8 years old and quite tiresome on long journeys.
Long story short, we both think it's great car. It's not very PH to like SUVs but for the job we use it to do, ie as a family car carting the kids, their stuff and putting our bikes on it, I'd thoroughly recommend it. It's quick enough with the family on board, does decent mpg and the 1.5 is really nice engine. It drives in a very car like way as you'd expect and the inside works very well with the individual rear seats that can be reclined, folded or completely removed. Up front is a nice place to sit with enough tech to keep me happy, and nice seats.
We 'bought' ours on a superb 3 year PCH deal from our local Skoda Main Dealer. It was crazy cheap for what we've got and I have no regrets at all.

Thanks, not overly positive is it. Wonder if that affects the Ateca as well.https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/446820-15-se...

Thanks, I think it would be the SEL spec one we would get. The flexibility of the seats in the Karoq really appeal as well. A few questions if you don't mind. Do you have any of the kangaroo issues mentioned in the Briskoda thread? Is yours a manual or Dsg? Also interested to hear what sort of mpg you get in normal use?Long story short, we both think it's great car. Finally, how does it compare to the Octavia VRS you had, is interior refinement a bit better?

No worries at all. The flex seats are superb! Ours is a manual 6sp and the issues on the Briskoda thread were the first I'd heard of the kangarooing. Having just asked my wife about it, she says it does do it very occasionally when cold but she puts it down to poor technique. I've never noticed it myself, maybe we got lucky, I'm not sure! First gear seems quite short to me so I change up to second quite quickly. MPG wise, we get 38-40mpg doing local stuff like dropping the kids off and get 46-48mpg on a long motorway run with the cruise in at 75-80mph.Finally, how does it compare to the Octavia VRS you had, is interior refinement a bit better?
Our Octavia VRS was a facelift Mk2 and there's no doubt at all the interior refinement is better with nicer switchgear and plastics. It is 8 years newer though. The seats in the VRS were good but I actually prefer the Karoq seats as they're better made and more comfortable on a long journey. Getting the driving position right does take a bit of time in the Karoq. I do find it quieter with less road and tyre noise but again I think that's to be expected.

Thanks, yes you'd expect it to be better than the older Octavia, I only have experience as a passenger in the MK3 Octavia and thought that was slightly noisier than expected on the motorway. Sounds like positive feedback anyway, and that mpg seems good, only slightly less than our Leon which I'd expect. Think I need to wade through Briskoda for more info and arrange a test drive of both. Our Octavia VRS was a facelift Mk2 and there's no doubt at all the interior refinement is better with nicer switchgear and plastics. I borrowed the new Audi Q3 for a day last year with the 1.5 TFSI engine. Obviously shares it's underpinnings with the Ateca and Karoq.
Engine itself seems good and quite similar to the 1.4 TFSI it replaces. No discernable difference in performance, but I thought economy was maybe a tad lower than before
Biggest disappointment is the new 7-speed DSG 'box they're fitting with these, it seems to be crippled from before with lots of irritating lag. So until they solve that I'd strongly advise sticking with the Manual! It's documented quite well in this review https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/audi/35-tfsi-s...

Had a brief look at a Karoq and thought the car itself seemed very good, decent quality interior and the varioflex seats clever. Not loads of space in the back but enough, and boot space definitely good enough. Will go back and have a drive.
However, the reports I'm hearing on the 1.5tsi really are not encouraging. Lots of issues across forums with the manual box, but then also different concerns about the auto box.
Maybe a nearly new Ateca with the 1.4 act engine is the best solution, but you pay almost as much as a new one through a broker.

The trouble with the manual (apart from the juddering issue) is you're pretty well caught up in having to use auto-hold and the electric handbrake. There are plenty of complaints about them not releasing reliably, and the odd complaint about the handbrake not working and the car rolling away after a while.I know from monitoring an Ateca forum (daughter has a 1.0 Ateca SE-L) that one owner's 1.5 was so bad the dealer put him in a courtesy last year pending the release of new software, which I don't think has been released yet.
I have to say her 1 litre goes well - and pretty amazing spec with leather, nav, LED headlights etc - bought it cash for just under £20K. Personally, I think the no-options "easymove" thing SEAT is doing is good - her car arrived in 3 weeks at the height of the WLTP hold-ups.

Yeah that sounds familiar, I had problems with the Auto Hold not releasing properly on my 2015 GTD DSG. Surprised they haven't fixed by now!Sheepshanks said:
