Not that I wish to restrict myself Canon. But my A1 served me well. - Canon EOS 350D seems to have the functionality of the A1 but up-to-date? (WHAT SHOULD I BUY AND WHAT SHOULD IT COST) Am I right or way off the mark?

As was said on my previous post once I have the new toy I will ebay for loose change!

As an A1 and AE1 owner ...

The 350D is really quite compact as a body - I felt maybe a little too compact in some ways but I could get used to it. Of course the lenses are of a size so compact boy means little when carrying it around.

Target prices - just under 600 for the body, just over 600 for the 'kit' with the 'standard' zoom lens.

For a review or two with sample shots have a look here

I'm still trying to decide between the 350D and the 20D (I think!) but in the meantime having fun with a little Pentax Optio S5i.

in the latest amateur photographer they tested all the entry level dslrs against each other. They came to the conclusion that the d70 was fractionally better than the 350d, but really not a lot to choose between them

Mentioned in an other post - Currys on line are doing the 350D with 18-55 lens for £595. Up as £645 but enter the code june50off and get £50 off. Offer on until 31/05. Cheapest I could find for the body + lens kit.

My goodness, thanks. I will look out for that. I haven't bought an AP for at least 20 years! I guess a built in flash is very useful! Not sure that the Canon has this.

Me neither, ever since they stopped the 'How to shoot glamour' articles

Defintitely yes. It's not very powerful of course but it's very handy for throwing a bit of extra light into a scene and offers balanced fill-flash (iTTL which uses distance info from the lens to help calculate exposure).

I believe the new D70s is out now or very soon?

another thing is that they reckoned the kit lens on the Nikon was much better than on the Canon
