I am thinking about installing some kind of tech device in my GTR, and wonder what others have installed, and how they have installed them.

I have the standard factory dashboard trimmed in leather. I am thinking of cutting out a recess on the passenger side and fixing something from behind, with the leather wrapped round the edges. Alternatively buying some kind of surface mounting. Either way looking to make it look integrated. I have right handed rod shift, not that it should make a huge difference to the location - though I note some with left handed shifters have installed something in front of the shifter.

I would like it to have a decent sat nav and be able to use apps such as Torque Pro which I have on my mobile phone and which logs data and allows you to check error codes etc. Possibly a rearward looking camera at some point too. No interest really in a sound system as I don't think I'd use it.

I am veering towards a tablet device with GPS and a pay as you go SIM to get traffic updates etc. so the sat nav will hopefully be about as good as a Garmin/Tom Tom. 7" seems a good size, but might possibly squeeze an 8" in. Options seem to be Samsung, Huawei etc. or maybe an Apple iPad mini - though I am not really a fan of Apple.

Appreciate any thoughts, or photos. I'll also see what the factory have to say, as I can see more tech options on the Evo cars.

Why not just get a phone mount, it will do everything you ask and you presumably already have the contract? Maybe it's an excuse to upgrade to that new larger smartphone!

Here's a few pics.... more on my FB build page, from the link above.

Yes, I fabricated it myself, it wasn't that hard, just time consuming! I chose the Samsung as I was able to hack it so that it started up and shut down based on the car's ignition. I couldn't (at the time) find a way to do it with an iPad, otherwise I would have used an Apple product. The Samsung / Android combo did the job, but to be honest, they're not a patch on Apple kit (personal opinion, I really dislike Android). I have the tablet doing what I want (media & sat nav), but when it crashes (as it does frequently), it's bloody pain to get the table out and hard reboot it. I might have a look to see if there's a better power management option with IOS, as if there is, I'll be rebuilding!

Looks great, but a black tablet would look much better than the white!
