Guys, I am planning to get a 00-07 petrol Mondeo Estate to replace my 03 320d Touring.

They're not as abundant as the diesels, so I'm trying to imagine other options.

Edit: how is Astra p5-09 legroom compared to the E46?

I need a big* estate/suv/mpv, petrol, under £1200, with a cheap insure.

Any options other than the mondeo?

  • When I say big, it's that I need more legroom than the current E46.

I've got an 06 2.2TDCi and i like it, ok i would prefer it if it was petrol but this was the right price at the right time. Its cost me a service an egr valve although i think more work is required, currently its lacking lights and a front bumper as i intended to change the front foglight which is smashed, however the screw is seized and i've had to take the front bumper off.

The rear suspension needs work for the mot as do the rear brakes which need stripping and cleaning and this morning it decided to let off a puff of blue smoke on start up and i'm trying to convince myself that i cannot feel the start of DMF failure. I'm tempted by a subaru legacy, but i want automatic and the fuel economy might not be great.

Another question on the same topic:

Its hard to find petrol Mondeo Estates...and diesel are way cheaper.

I want a petrol mainly because 90% of my drives are less than 3mi each way, always under 40mph.
Once a week I get 20 minutes of motorway driving, not sure if it'll be enough to avoid dpf problems.

Should I stick with the petrols? Or can go for diesels without issues?

I've had three Mondeo's of that age, all hatchbacks though in my case, I'd say if your going petrol go for a V6, my preffered choice would be an ST220, lovely car inside and a very nice engine in my opinion.

My last Mondeo was a Mk3 with the slightly less powerful 2.5 V6 engine in Ghia X spec and it really was very nice, I sold it later for a BMW 320 Tourer and I still think it was a bad idea to this day even though the BMW is also now long gone.

My 2.2 tdci does 1 mile to work, no dpf, injectors and egr valves can be issues though.
