Since my circumstances have changed I've been looking to purchase a TDI 2.0 170 of some sort.

I've got a limit of £2.5k I know it's not much but I don't want to spend loads as I do around 20k miles a year.

I've seen a few cars but can't really decide. It's got to have 4/5 doors so I've got a wide range. I've looked at things from Skoda Octavia vRS to Leon FR.

Ideally the car needs to be comfy but have a bit of sporty about it. I think the Leon would be a bit of a hard ride for my 75 mile round trip each day.

So if anyone could shed any light on the VW AUDI group that would be grately appreciated.

Any other suggestions from other makes would be helpful.

Stay away from both the 140 & 170 of that era. Both troublesome especially the 170.

VAG is not VW Audi Group.

Volkswagen A.G.

Besides, even if it was, it'd be Volkswagen Audi Gruppe

I'm not a fanboy of german cars so I don't know much about them.

I were wondering if anyone had any experience of these TDi 170s in any form and which would be ideal to motorway driving.

As I've said I like the look on the Leon but the cabin isn't as good as an Audi.

I have a 170 Quattro A3 had it for about 2.5 years and 50k it has been very reliable for me.
But not as economical as I thought it would be (possibly because of the Quattro?)
It is a nice enough car but I regret buying it and if I sold it now I would lose quite a bit of money on it so I just keep running it.
I had a nail of a focus estate before and much preferred it. Apart from it looking really rough! If I was in your position knowing what I know now. I would go for a mondeo/ focus or an older vag with the 1.9

Does it have to be VAG?

With a 2.5k budget you need to get a decent car with sensible miles on the clock especially when doing 20k you want something reliable & comfortable as well, with this budget in mind I'd actually go for the 140 as it was much more reliable.

Leon Sport

These would be where I'd be looking if I had your budget:

C220 Coupe Sport Edition 150

Manual CLK 220 Avantgarde 150

These have pretty much bulletproof drivetrain & are good value for money & the running costs are on par with any VAG.

Another option is the Civic 2.2d:

If you go for the less popular makes (that are no less reliable) then there are some real value for money options out there:

No it doesn't have to be german and thanks for the list.

I'm not a fan of the Civic or Auris. They don't look that nice to me. It has to be 4/5 door due to family needing access to the rear. 3 doors just isn't practical with getting in and out.

I'm wanting something with decent power hence the 170. I know my budget won't stretch that far but I don't want to spend loads as the miles I'm doing will decrease the value rather quickly.

The Alfas look nice but I just don't know how reliable they are. My old man use to have an Alfa which kept breaking and he did a lot of miles. So I'm put off a little by them. Especially an older Alfa.

The C270's (170bhp 400lb/ft) I listed tick all the boxes they're built to do those miles I sold mine with 170k on the clock the only extras I had to pay for in the 95k I had the car was a new Injector & an Alternator.

Mine was mapped & consistently returned mid to high forties on a run with mid thirties around town as well as mid to high twenties in Central London stop start traffic.

The Alfa's are reliable the 150's need an oil flush every other service the 8V's have no issues but there only 120bhp.
