A8 D3 4.2 TDi glowplug light flashing

Not had this problem before. Driving along, engaged sport mode for an overtake, booted it and it seemed a bit sluggish then the glow plug light started flashing mid overtake and the car went into limp mode 
Got to my destination, switched off and restarted and the problem remained. Started it this morning, the light was still flashing but stopped after a couple of minutes. Power is back to normal. I tried to get it to do it again (without overtaking!) and it seems fine now.
It's going in for a service tomorrow so I'll get the fault codes read which will give more of a clue.
Any likely causes? It's having a fuel filter change as that's overdue.
