Feeling a bit 'Golfy', and wandered into local VW dealer by accident. Fancied an auto-thing as current car spends most of its time sniffing the exhausts of stationary town traffic. Had a MK5 diesel Golf and liked that, drove a Mk6 Bluemotion and liked that. Er...

Many Golfs to see and discretely fondle. But all a bit pricey. And they all look the same. Like Golfs.

Find a March 2016 Jetta SE parked where no-one can see it so as not frighten people off. It's a Golf with a boot, right?

If the price was right it sounds like an Ok buy!

The Jetta of that era was based on the Golf Mk6 but had a facelift or two in it's time. The 2.0 TDI will be belt driven and shouldn't need any attention until it's either 5-years old or 120k(ish) miles if I remember right. Not 100% sure on the DSG but would expect it to be a 7-speed given it's the 110PS engine rather than 140PS.

Vielen danke. DSG appears to have 'sport mode'. SPORT MODE! I hope it's not too exciting. I wouldn't want to spill me Horlicks.

It's worth checking whether the 110ps 2.0 TDI lump is a downtuned 140ps. There are several models in the VAG stable where the TDI engines are very responsive to remap, noting that they can have different transmissions. (E.g. VW Transporter 2.0 TDI is 100% identical in 84, 102 and 140ps versions, apart from map).

I had a mk6 golf with this engine, it went into limp mode once in the 120k I covered in it, other than that it was a bit slow but a nice car.

I Also many years ago had a VW Bora, which I loved, I still see them and think they look fresh, I’ve now got a A3 saloon, which is like the bora, just more expensive I have a thing for small saloons.

Like the Jetta, totally under rated I reckon

Thank you, I had a MK5 Golf with the PD140(?) which remapped nicely. There's words on another forum about the 110PS 2.0 using the same internals as the larger models, but with lesser injectors and turbo.

I like saloons too, VW Europe axed the Jetta in 2016 (?) - the Jetta GT was available for a short while at silly prices, but they all got snapped up while I dithered.

An update:

Three weeks in to Jetta-ing in the used 2016 7.4K miles Dieselgate Special.

Car was immaculate on pickup, appears to have spent its previous three years cocooned in bubble-wrap.

65 mpg on the motorway, quiet ride, very refined.
