I’ve posted this in general cars but due to so many posts on that section I thought I would post it here too.

I’ve recently purchased a new BMW X3 M40i. Really enjoying the vehicle but on collection I found out that the factory hadn’t hung the drivers door correctly and someone had chipped the paint on the door. All sorted by the dealer promptly but my wife had been complaining of a petrol smell and chemical smell when she took our 9 and 5 year old on the school run.

Tbh I just thought it was the new engine possibly bedding in and going from several years of diesel to a petrol vehicle thought nothing of it.

The vehicle is my daily car to commute to and from my work and since picking it up around October last year I’ve covered 5000 miles.

My concern is I’ve been suffering from headaches , blurred vision at times , poor sleep, poor memory and if I’m honest have started to feel a bit depressed. Yesterday though I was nearly sick while traveling as a passenger and my 9 year complained of a headache and sore throat so I took the car into the dealer and asked them to check.

They’ve just come back and said they have found a hole I think in the pipe to the turbo. It needs a new turbo and have lent me a car. My main concern is i feel very light headed and if I’m honest the smell smelled more chemical than petrol and was feeding through the ventilation system. My children have been in the car a lot and as yet I’m trying to find from the supplying dealer what actually have I and my family been inhaling.

I have two concerns ,

the dealer says they’ve found a hole in the pipe in the turbo but my gut and the actual smell makes me feel the exhaust fumes have been coming directly into the cabin. As I’ve already had the problem that a simple thing like the drivers door was not hung properly then I’m starting to feel my car might actually have not been put together properly.

Secondly has anyone have any ideas what would I be actually inhaling. I just don’t think petrol alone would give me these symptoms?

I should add the dealer has been prompt when I have brought this to their attention but my main concern is for the general health for my family and myself.

See mine in GG too.

Think you received some good advice there already?

Surely the summary is don't drive it, get a CO tester and tell BMW. Then dump it on them and get them to fix it to your satisfaction.

Or just reject the thing.

Not sure what else there is to say/for you to do?

What’s the thread title on GG? I presume that general gassing, yes?
