Any advice on a used CLS estate?

Hi all,

My S5 lease goes back end of April - loved it, but need something more practical this time, having had a new small addition to the family...

CONSTANTLY lurking on the lease thread, nothing thats been quite right for me frustratingly. I'm edging towards buying something used, 2-3 years old. Been considering 3 series touring, A4 Avant, and C350 estates.... hadn't even considered the CLS, but having seen one today, really like the look of it.

I am by NO means a car expert, so was hoping someone on here could give me some advice on the best engine to go for if I take the CLS route? Ruling out the C63 as much as i'm sure its amazing! So, the 220 or the 350, anything to look out for?

If only the 350e engine came in the CLS shooting brake.

Best of both worlds instead of the engine only being in the C and the CLS having the looks but only a diesel engine.

I saw that one advertised too and it does look lovely. 350 is the one to go for by all accounts as is meant to be smooth and loads of torque but the 220's are a fair bit cheaper and more around. A few threads in the Mercedes forum on here from a few years back

Think I prefer the pre-facelift without the blinhy front grill but if I was going to get one it would be euro 6 which are all facelift. Considering one myself in a year's time when my lease goes back.

The 350's are very hard to find so if you see one for sale then snap it up as they're few & far between.

Plenty of 350 CDI's about. If you mean petrol then yeah, super rare [if they even sold a 350 petrol Shooting Brake over here].

I've seriously been considering a CLS Shooting Brake as a replacement for my Forester STi.

I didn't think I'd ever be interested in a diesel but as the selection of petrol estates are tiny, diesel it is [but only if it's got 6 c cylinders].

Two things I've got to figure out though, will it fit in my single garage and will I miss the performance of my Foz to much? Think I'd immediately make an appointment with MSL in Birmingham for a bit more power etc!

As per the OP, I'd be interested in hearing the good and bad about the CLS SB. My budget would be smaller than the OP so I'd be looking at pre-facelift.
