Gilmour is Selling his Guitars!

The reasoning is unclear, but Pink Floyd's David Gilmour is auctioning off his guitar collection for charitable causes:-

It includes 1954 Fender Stratocaster serial #0001 given to Dave by Leo Fender as a gift



I wonder if Christie's would accept an Ibanez SA as p/x for the "Black Strat"

I heard him on radio say it was time for someone else to get their use and play them.
Hmm.
Then he added something nearer the truth. They'll probably all end up in individual show cases somewhere never to be played again.
He didn't mention the fortune they will probably fetch.

He doesn't need the money or the guitars and has come up with a good idea, if he didn't sell them someone else might do after his death

Nothing has hit the 1m USD mark yet but an acoustic came close at 900k.

Black Strat is going to make a fortune...

Such a shame that the proceeds aren't going to worthwhile charities that will actually benefit people such as the homeless etc. I think he's lost the plot a bit, sad to say. And I’m a long term fan having seen him play several times.

Edited to add, for those who don’t know, a climate change “charity” is going to benefit from the lot.

There were some astounding prices achieved,
but for me the most ridiculous was $175,000 for a flight case!

But putting it all into perspective, the sale total was less than
the value of Nick Mason's 250 GTO.

Over $3m for a Stratocaster?!, it is a very collectible one that’s for sure, sadly it’s unlikely to get played again, vintage Strats sound awesome.

Only just heard the sale result, seems I was right when I said 'fortune'!

And yes, all, inc the Strat, will never be picked up to be played again, just showcased on some bare walls.

As for him giving the lot to 'climate change' charity (what?).
I'm from the 'old' psychedelic days and remember watching them do the catchy Arnold Lane and See Emily Play. Then gradually losing some interest until Division Bell - which I played to death for ages.

Why give the money away? Well he doesn't need it, that's for sure. But then I remember Peter Green (is God! - or was) doing it too, or wanting to give his dosh all away - until the German hippy drug cult totally destroyed his genius and mind.
Life and music, eh? Eric Burdon once sang 'wanna find the truth in life, don't pass music by' - he was spot on.

And if you're lucky it does goes on. Someone always comes along to replace your hero(es).
Lindsey Buckingham was mine, along with Mike Campbell.

Thanks for the wonderful guitar memories Dave, but 'climate change charity', nah. As someone above pointed out why not more deserving charity in the true sense? Still, as already said, his money, his choice.

It's very likely to get played again. By the owner, other musicians and fans. Jim Irsay is probably the best owner for it, some of his other instruments are incredible. He also purchased the WYWH Martin.

The Red Strat (1984 model) has also gone to a player who will use it.

I think my cousin has just bought one of the guitars, if he has it will certainly be played and used on future recordings. Will find out soon anyway.
