Hi,

I am looking at buying a 2017 or 18 Leon FR Estate and wondering which engine to choose. I am hoping to keep the car for a while and looking for reliability and a (small) improvement on mpg.

Current car is a 2011 Octavia Vrs Estate 2.0 Tsi doing about 6k a year mostly city driving.

Options are;

1.4 125 tsi
1.4 150 tsi Act cylinder deactivation
1.8 180 tsi

I'm thinking 125 maybe a bit too slow, 150 a bit of a reliability gamble in the future and the 1.8 a good compromise but possibly not much more efficient than the Octavia.

Anyone have any experience with these?

Thanks

My dad has the 125 version.

Performance is actually surprisingly good.

Might struggle if fully loaded I guess.

Fuel economy is very good. Gets close to 50mpg on some runs.

That sounds promising and worth a test drive.

Thanks

I had a test drive in a Golf 1.5Tsi DSG 130 recently and was really surprised by it. Pokey enough on the motorway and managed 55mpg on a 215 mile drive.

I'm sure the 1.4 will be similar.

I've ordered a 1.5 as a company car which will do 100k in 3 years, hopefully reliability will be fine

I have the FR ST with the 1.4 TSI DSG engine (2018 version). Im not sure if that would be any different to the 2017 model?

It's a decent engine and over 5k miles I've got an average of 46mg which seems very good (mostly local, some long distance). Engine is very quiet and performance is excellent for what it is.

In fact, the whole car is very good, the only downside is mine has the 18" wheels and the road noise on certain surfaces is excessive.

I think that's a good choice. It would be a no brainer if i wasn't going to hang onto it for a while or if reliability issues weren't going to be my problem. I am leaning towards either the 125 or 180.

Thanks

Is that with cylinder deactivation?

Sounds like what I am looking for in a car.

Yes, that's right. I find it impossible to tell if the cylinders are deactivated at all - it's very quiet and smooth.

I'd go for the 1.8 as more power = less stress especially when loaded so that would sway it for me.

I currently have the 1.4 150 engine in my wife's Leon Fr. Previously had an A3 with the same engine.

Decent performance and good fuel consumption. Reliability has been spot on so far. I was actually looking on auto trader at them to see how much it's depreciated this past 15 months. Not a lot is the answer.

Plus a few of them advertised have done some decent mileage. There's a 65 plate with well over 100k. Reliability doesn't seem to be too much of an issue for the 1.4 either. *touches wood. Ooh err.

I had a 5 day test drive of the FR ST - the excessive road noise was the deal breaker for me. Rest of the car was good, lots of tech and equipment for the price.

I don't think you need to be concerned with long term reliability of the 1.4 tsi ACT. It's been around for 5 years and I haven't seen any major issues reported. Our Leon FR is over 80k miles now, and aside from a faulty radiator has been totally reliable, and continues to get 45-50mpg in daily use.

Sadly the later 1.5 version seems to have a few issues that I've seen, which is a shame as we'd probably look to get one when we replace the Leon.

I think the 1.4 ACT 150 is the way to go, I have one of the cheap 3 door FR lease deals with the 1.4 125 and while it is nippy I think in a estate fully loaded it could feel slow. I'm on the SeatCupra forum regularly and haven't seen many posts about the unreliability of the ACT engine.

So its not just me then. Did your test car have the 18" wheels? I wonder if a change of tyres would solve it (or at least help).

Would probably help, but I wouldn't expect a huge transformation. The Octavia based on the same platform also suffers the same issue. Seems to be a lack of sound deadening either as a result of making the cars cheaper than the Golf, or VW asserting the Group brand pecking order.

Funny you should mention the road noise, I had a Mk7 Golf GTI with 19" wheels and the road noise was horrendous. The 16"s on the A3 are much quieter, but there's still quite a bit more road noise than I'd like.

Must be a VAG thing

I have owned a Leon 1.8 FR for almost 4 years. It's the hatchback, not the estate but the engine is the same.

the car has been great. Averages 40mpg in mixed driving. Servicing is reasonably, doesn't use any oil.

Performance is more than enough for normal road use and the ride quality is firm but acceptable.

It's got plenty equipment and I understand that the brakes are from the Mk6 Golf GTI - certainly not short on stopping power.

I'm a fan of warm hatchbacks / estates - they tick all the boxes for me as I don't need more than 200bhp.
