Had my first real go in the 650s this morning together with a friend in a R8 V10 plus. Crisp temperatures but dry, empty roads here in the North. First time I’ve been able to really put in the pedal all the way for more than just a moment. May have been that cold air boosted by the turbos, but the 600 hp Audi may just as well have been a Vauxhall van in the rear view mirror. Felt like much more than a 40 bhp difference.

Power to weight, simple as that.

Simple, much more power under the curve so if you both weren't accelerating from high revs, the Mclaren would outrun the R8 easily. Would be a bit different on track at high revs.

Well, makes for a refreshing change from Ferrari's being specially prepped for road test reviews....

650S all probably make more than 641bhp anyway but its 200kg + lighter than the R8 too, with more torque!
Never drove a car that coped with its power better but in 7000 odd miles I doubt I actually floored it fully more than 10 times,
Outside a race track, there's just no need, and not enough space !!

There`s only so much power you can put through the tyres to the road...pretty sure they are all electronically limited until you are comfortably into 3 figure speeds...

Mclarens have a 'dyno mode' which needs the diagnostic kit to set up (hence its taken us 5 years to get to this point). Dnyo mode disables all the TC so its down to tyre grip and engine mapping.

Dyno readings are never really accurate. Be interesting to hear Thorney's claims though and the delta between the two 650 and 12c.

Personally I'd say a 650s is spot on at 650 ps running 0-300kph in just under 24 secs. Same with 12c. Early cars 0-300kph in 31 secs. Later cars about 26 secs 0-300kph. Dyno a bit meaningless in this context where the facts are the facts.
