I sold my car today to a private buyer. gave him the green slip. just had a call to say he is unable to tax it online using the doc ref number. It keeps coming up number invalid..... any idea why ? I haven't cancelled the tax yet my end so could this be the problem.?

Did you give him the slip from the most recent V5 form? Only the number from the most recent V5 will work. If you did then the buyer will need to tax it at a post office.

The same thing happened to me last year. It turned out I'd got the new owner to sign, and sent him away with, the old style V5 forgetting I'd been sent the newer style one when they came out.

Wrong logbook - you’d have received a more recent one

I've had trouble with this before, though for declaring SORN. I think there's a flaw in their system.

Best option is probably for him to go to a post office to see if he can sort it out there.

If he bought it today, did you change ownership online. If not then it'll still be taxed untill documents are sent away
