My current car has seen better days and I'm looking for some inspiration on a car (or pickup)
I know you guys are great at suggesting cars, what have you got? No 3.2L A4's, please rofl The running costs on something like that would break me..

Surely you can give us more requirements than that?

Say 4/5 seats, not too bothered about comfort, and an average of maybe just over 30mpg?

If you don't like the idea of running a 6 cylinder then I'd say look Focus ST-3 preferably a last of line 2.5T with some Mountune mods, not as good as the Megane RS 250 but they have the 2.5T which for me was worth sacrificing a bit of handling for.

OPs point about not wanting a v6 I assumed meant that performance wasn't a requirement.

Maybe tamer wasn't the word.. Would you recommend an E92 estate?

Which engine? It depends on if you want an estate, they're a decent car but it's all dependent on what you want from your intended purchase.
