A friend of mine sold his Mercedes SLK 180 Kompressor, and asked me wether I had any suggestions for a cheap (up to 3.500 pounds), reliable roadster. I suggested a NB MX-5, or maybe a BMW Z3 1.8 or 1.9. Even though his preference goes to an automatic Transmission, I think he'd be better of with a Manual in those types of cars.

I however wondered if anyone had any other suggestions, or if I've made a mistake by suggesting the MX-5 or Z3, as I've never owned one. (Although I hope to own a NB or NC MX-5 somewhere in the near futures.)

If he wants an auto there are some decent options out there:

SLK350

Not a roadster but the 350Z is worthy of consideration

Wow, I didn't realise a Z4 with a proper engine could be that cheap. And I personally love the 350Z, but I don't believe my mate could apreciate it's gas guzzler tendencies ;-).

You do realise the Z4 in the links is only 3mpg better than the 350Z so a full fat Z4 may not be for him.
