Hands up if you're on the verge of death smile

Started to come down with it Thursday 24/1, felt a bit ropey after my evening run usual stuff - dry throat, feeling cold. Tried to kill it with a few Whisky Macs. Felt worse on Friday but still went to work, by the end of the day pretty shivery and took to bed early. Weekend a write off and ended up being off work sick for the entire week. Was supposed to be meeting some old Uni mates in the city for a drink on Thursday night but that weren't happening. Longest I've ever had off work with a cold.

Back to work today, over the worst of it but still making a lot of snot and got a niggly cough. The boy puked up twice on Saturday and was beginning to wonder if that was coming my way too as my stomach was a bit tender this morning. Seem okay now.

It's my own fault, was commenting to a mate on the New Year's Day Parkrun as to how I don't really get colds now since taking up running.

I'm just coming to the end of my second case of man flu.

First was over new year. Spent four days in bed feeling sorry for myself.

Cough stayed for ages and only really went 23/01.

25/01 I felt terrible, but put it down to stress having my final interview for a job and not sleeping much the night before.

Saturday I was dying. Sweating my moobs off in bed but shivering. Splitting headache. Slept for most the day and night.

Horrible cough that brings up a load of phlem, that I've still got a little of.

Worst part is I've put my back out, so every time I sneeze I want to cry!

My poor girlfriend...she works in a pharamacy, so was getting daily texts of what to do ha.

I came down with a dose of it on Wednesday 23rd, the first indication being that I had a sore throat and headache.

I couldn't get out of bed on Thursday, a migraine type head ache and every part of my body aching, even the hairs on my head hurt! I went to work Friday but only managed half a day. I was meant to be out on Saturday meeting up with some old friends for our annual beer and curry night and a night away from home, but had to cancel as I felt rough and didn't want to pass the lurgy about.
My thermostat was to pot as I was hot then cold, then hot again, shivering and shaking then sweating.

I didn't move from the sofa all weekend then back to work on Monday. All last week was a blur as I had splitting head, sinus and ear ache as well as a chest full of snot. I was in bed by 9pm every night last week (and yesterday as a day at work leaves me feeling drained)

I'm still not 100% and have neck ache and a sore throat having tried to have a normal family weekend of doing stuff. I've been taking cod liver oil and vitamin tablets, echinacia tablets, Lemsip Max flu tablets and ibuprofen, and eating my own body weight in Kiwi fruit washed down with gallons of tea.

I'm now bored of this and would love to be back to normal. In the time I've had it both my kids and wife have had it and recovered whilst with me it is lingering.

Not me, but my 87 year old dad, he's generally very fit, still plays the trumpet in a big band on a weekly basis, currently teaching himself to play piano..
He lives 6 hours away from me, he phoned a couple of weeks ago telling me the paramedics were in the house and they were admitting him to hospital there and then.
He hadn't been feeling good for the previous few days with cold and flu symptoms.
On the evening in question his legs were aching so badly he couldn't get out of his armchair, he managed to crawl to the phone, took him over half an hour.
He was in hospital for three nights, in the words of the doctor he had a "particularly virulent" flu virus!
He's recovered now, however while I was with him an ambulance arrived at the house opposite, where his 82 year old cousin lives, and took her to hospital. Same thing, only she'd fallen over while trying to get out of a chair, a neighbour found her on the floor. As well as flu she ended up with pneumonia, after 10 days she's being discharged from hospital tomorrow.

My dad lives in a very small town where there appears to be a mini epidemic of real flu, my dad turned up at the GP, for a routine blood test, only to be turned away, the surgery is overrun and can't cope with the number of patients turning up at the moment!

And yes, he did have his annual flu jab.

I've just recovered from a very odd cough. No cold/flu symptoms other than sore chest for a week then a murderously tickly cough that kept me up all night for a few days. Gone now. Not really man/flu I suppose, sorry.

I caught what I thought was a case of man-flu. High temps, fever, aching joints. It got so bad I took to my bed, started to think it was actual flu! Then I coughed and it floored me. One call to 111 later it turned out I had an infected lower lung, still trying to get over it. can't run as it seems to be still inflamed.

Worst cold ever.

My dose of man-flu never really went away, it became a cold and has now turned back into man-flu as I ache and am freezing cold and shivering again.
3 weeks of feeling cr4ppy is getting boring!

There's certainly something doing the rounds as two of my work mates were off with it last week and one is still off today.

Lots of actual flu going round this year it seems. My boy got it, then I got it, then my Mrs got it. Cue lots of juggling ourselves in and out of bed depending on who felt least terrible.

The boy got stuck on the stairs, bawling his eyes out because his legs hurt so much. I ended up being sick a lot due to swallowing so much gunk and also had several enjoyable nights where one minute I needed three duvets and the next was sweating like it was 50 degrees. Ended up with two weeks off work, mainly because every time I felt slightly better, the Mrs took to bed, so I was home with the kids, then that overdid it, and I would get ill again, she'd get up and look after the kids, rinse and repeat.

I'm finally back in work, but far from 100%. It seems to be normal to be properly ill for 7 days, then take another 14 or so to recover.

A fortnight on I've now caught a mere cold another severe man-flu.

I think I might die.

Another victim here.
Felt tired and achey after a busy day at work on Saturday 9th.
Woke up on Sunday in agony - felt like I had received a good kicking.
Got up to drink a load of orange juice to quench a real thirst, then back to bed.
Spent next 3 days laying around shivering and aching.

Strange thing is I received the flu jab in October so can't understand how I still got flu.

Just about over it now, still a little phlegmy and a slight cough. Did a slow Parkrun on Saturday with the boy and then proper run Tuesday night.

The wife, who I blame for infecting me in the first place, now has another cold. Better not give it to me! Shes recently got a part time job running baby groups and it made me cast my mind back to when our kids first started nursery, seemed to get every cough, cold and stomach bug going back then. Hope this isn't going to repeat now she's exposed to baby germs again!

I’m into week 5... started off as a standard winter cold, except I have to say it was one of the worst colds I’ve had in terms of nose material!! It was absolutely pouring out 24/7. Slowly got worse with the shivers, aches and a cracking headache. Got damn close to a chest infection I think as my lungs burned when I coughed.
Slowly got better, but can’t shift the slight sniffles, and a hacking cough that brings up thick mucus.
I’ll quite happily declare its the worse cold I’ve ever had.

Colleagues and friends are having similar experiences, seems this winters germs are persistent buggers.

I’m currently on a strict regime of berrocca and a healthy diet to try and get my immune system fighting fit - I don’t want that cold back!!

Thread bump!

Been feeling rotten since Tuesday, started with a sore throat that quickly turned into a hacking cough then into the hot/cold fever and sweats that has kept me pretty much in bed since. Having terrible night sleep with crazy frustrating nightmares the last few nights.

Have felt slightly better by day this weekend but I’ve attempted to venture the 400yds to the shop for supplies I come back dizzy with my head feeling like it’s going to explode.

My daughter has been off school with similar but not so much the fever and she’s got over it much quicker wonder if its because she’s had the flu spray or she’s just harder than me.

Hopefully improvement over the next couple of days!

I'm just getting over identical symptoms: sore throat, cough, streaming nose etc. etc. It's taken a week and a half all told and I'm still coughing up gunk now and again but Covonia Chesty Cough Mixture Mentholated is sorting that out.

Staring this in the face...

Daughter had it just before Christmas. Knocked her down for a week and a half - very unusual for her.

My wife was taken down Christmas day. I feel a bit coldly, but fought it off so far...

Well I’m still feeling awful. Lasted about a week or 10 days then started getting able to function a bit more but still didn’t feel very good.

On Monday took a sharp turn downhill again with the fever also noticed my peeing was becoming uncomfortable and laboured trip to the docs and I’m now on antibiotics and suspected kidney infection.

What a crap Christmas it’s been!

Same here. Came off my cycle 10 weeks ago, bruising ribs. Felt rough for a month. Started cycling again only to get this cold/virus. Nose like a tap, sneezing and coughing crud up,which didn't help my ribs. Had it 3 weeks today, and still only feel about 80%of normal. Roll on next year.

Spent the week before Christmas in bed, temperature, aches and my eyes were really painful. When I closed them I swear I could see the aurora borialis sic! On my feet now but still feel rough and coughing up the odd dockyard oyster.

Now my ears ache. Creaking noise. Anyway, could be worse.

I had the shivers and teeth chattering on Thursday, you know it's going to be a bad one when that happens. Spent all of Friday in bed as a sweaty mess with a head cold.

I had two naps during the day then a 10hr+ sleep last night and I'm feeling slightly better today, so I was able to venture out for some provisions this morning:

Night Nurse - works quite well if you have a cough that stops you from sleeping.
Kleenex Balsam - seems to be the best tissue I've tried.
Vaseline - apply around the nostrils to stop them getting red and sore.
Tinned fruit - soft and sweet so it's easy to eat. I drink some water afterwards in case the acid in the fruit irritates the throat.
Honey - I like it in my tea when I've got a cold.

I think plenty of nutritious food + vitamins and lots and lots of sleep is the best remedy for cold/flu.

Another victim here, started with a cough yesterday, night sweats, muscle pain, phlegm, headache. It’s in full effect today, I’ve even had to take a sick day at work which I haven’t done for a long time.

Hopefully I can kick it over the next few days with rest!
