Hi, so restoring an early 1980's Suzuki to a high standard, maybe a bit anal, but what do you do with the factory poor welding, do you leave as is or try to tidy it up. Nothing rare it was a mass produced bike at the time and most of the frame won't be visible once all parts back on - thought would get census now - before its coated and wife points out the floors .

Anal nowadays means only blowing a bit of paint over it so you can see its only had a ligt dusting of paint and the metal looming underneath...thats how they came from the factory.

I wouldnt waste the time anyway but its your bike , your choice, no right or wrong on that one IMHO.

I guess that is the inside of the frame, so won't be seen anyway?

I'd just leave it.

If you're really bothered, then cup-brush it back, treat it with something to stop it rusting and then smooth it out with some filler, I personally wouldn't start grinding and re-welding (and not just because my welding is st); much more time and effort than ever needed.

You can never polish a jobbie, the best you can do is to spray it gold...

Personally why you are going to do all that work I would tidy the welds up not a complete strip and re weld but a bit of a clean up, if you do not do it when the bike is finished you will always have that little niggle...

Thanks and snap, this is the same bike i had at 16 in 1981. Amazing just sitting on it brought memories flooding back. Can believe how big and heavy it is. I live in Stevenage and as its classed as a moped, so its eligible to ride on all the cycle paths here. Supposed next will be another restoration of my early bike history, so an RD12LC or DT125LC.
