My dad was a grafter who loved learning. His schooling was interrupted by the war, he became an apprentice, went to night school to gain his qualifications and continued with night school both as pupil and lecturer until his old age. He finished up as a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. He worked until he was nearly 80.

On the other hand, I hated school and slunk away with next to nothing. I do as little as possible to get by. The only further education I've had were English O level at night school - which was a good idea - and a Speed Awareness Course - which was pretty much compulsory.

My sons are more like me than I was like my dad. Take my eldest lad for example. He's a PHer.

Me:

No.1 son:

Oh, well maybe not, then.

My father was an academic ,I'm as thick as 4 planks.

I could list dozen of other things but won't.

I’m an engineer and chartered. Sons doing Chinese and French aiming to join the civil service and FO , daughters both doing art ( Bristol and 2nd wants to go to central st Martins)

Acorns couldn’t fall further from the tree. Mind you both sons doing Maths and Further Maths like me.

Support them whatever they want . I think they have made good choices

My father never owned a car in his life.

I love cars and have had a few sporty ones in my time.

My son loves cars and has had a few sporty ones in his much shorter life.

Same boat here. I like sport, cars (obvs), decent food. An I'm an Engineer too.

He was a teacher and likes nature, gardening, can't add up to save his life.

However I suspect that I may have got my interests from his dad, so it's skipped a generation.

I often wonder why I'm like I am, 'cos it sure as hell isn't cos of my Dad smile

Pater is five inches taller than me, about six inches narrower, has a nose four times larger and eyes three times beadier. I sound nothing like him either.

I get weird if I don't travel somewhere at least once a week. He never wanted to leave his chair. I like a warble and have a giant music collection. He's never willingly listened to anything. He'll eat a cowpat if it saves him money. I bring my own food when visiting.

If I was arsed I'd do a DNA test as I have more in common with Michael Jackson than him.

My dad is a self employed blacksmith and pretty hands on. I ended up going to uni, did an engineering degree and have a desk job which is apparently ‘engineering’.
Saying that, I like tinkering with cars and don’t seem too terrible at DIY. We also both ride off road motorbikes and used to race enduro. So I guess we’re not too dissimilar.

My dad never took anything seriously unless it really needed it. He joked around all time, I get told off for that constantly, worked his socks off and everyone loved him. He had quite a head of hair when he died aged 100. I'm 65 and still got all mine even after a divorce, and a business sale.
Both of us would do anything to avoid authority or trouble of any kind.

My son likes a joke, works really hard as an electrician, has lost most of his hair and God forbid he should see you mistreating a woman , child or dog. No idea where he gets that from.

I'm much more like Dad and even more like my older brother than my son is like me.

What have I inherited?
I look like him, I’m a bit taller though, very similar personality, tolerant up to a point and then BANG. Big interest in cars/motorsport and machines of all description, but my dad wasn’t an engineer as I am. I’ve also no musical ability but I love hearing it, suspicious of authority, going bald at the same age, similar sense of humour, and bouts of depression too.
I’ve also been told I take after my paternal grandad with a number of characteristics too.
Do others think that sons take after their fathers more than girls take after their mothers? Or vice versa?

There are some traits but I think they are more likely male traits as opposed to father and son traits.

He: can’t stand change, fears risk, doesn’t have a head for mechanics, is a tight bd and needs to have a completely regimented life with everything pigeon holed away.

I: spend my working life and by extension my own life in almost constant change, work in dangerous countries so not averse to risk, love getting my hands dirty with cars, generous with my family and close friends and tend to be an all or nothing type of guy with work and play.

So no, not similar in the slightest

That must be weird. Can you honestly not think of a single thing?

I sometimes hear my dad when I talk, and I have to make an effort not to crack the sorts of jokes he does, but that just could be his influence rather than his genes..

I'm adopted.
Know nothing of natural father and am nothing at all like adoptive father or subsequent step father.

a thought which no doubt fills my brother in law with total fear...

I have the same problem and have concluded that it's genes, not influence.

Still, my dad is a great bloke so it's a good problem to have! smile

I've not reproduced (never say never smile ) but my Dad & me?

Looks - very similar, height, width, (lack of) hair, face.
Skills - definitely a mix of both male sides of my parents. Paternal grandfather (& father) hand skill masters, moderately intelligent. Maternal grandfather couldn't hammer a nail but very clever. My DIY is poor but I am an electronics eng.
Personality - touch of the autistic. Neither parent nor grandparents were anything but gregarious so that's my special, er, skill smile
