Employment with two employers in the same sector?

My current job is employed, full time with a company working in commercial archaeological fieldwork. I am lead to believe that the company is not doing very well financially and that we will have to go to short time/reduced hours.

Can I work for a second company as an employee, without any difficulties with things like tax/pension contributions? The reason I want to keep my foot in the door at my current place is that I have a few pieces of outstanding work that will shortly go to the publication stage which I would like to be author of. Once I have published work, I can apply for full membership of my professional organisation which will open a lot more doors employment wise.

There is no real clash of company interests, the two companies' working areas do not really overlap so there is little competition for jobs. Additionally the two jobs would not be similar, my current job is as a project supervisor, the other is as an illustrator.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

As long as there is nothing in your contract preventing you then you can work for whoever you like.

Tax on the second job will be at BR. So if your combined salary is under 11,850 or over 46,350 you will be overpaying /underpaying tax accordingly. However this will be resolved at year end, although you might need to remind HMRC.
