She will not start, Starter motor spins but doesn't turn the engine over, I've replaced the starter clutch, god awful job, but now I'm stuck, is the damned thing seized? It's electric start only so I can't test compression and I can't put it into anything higher than second gear? I've replaced the wiring loom, just asking which bits am I going to have to look at and replace as the Haynes is garbage

All help needed!

Can you bump start it? The Kawasaki neutral finder clears the moment you are rolling to get into higher gears.

What makes you think the engine might be seized?

Sounds like something might be wrong with the starter clutch\solenoid. Can you pop a cover and turn the crank by hand to make sure everything rotating?

Try turning it over by hand from the crank, clockwise.

If it's too stiff, try taking the plugs out.

Can't bump start, flat as a pancake round here and I don't trust the brakes anyway frown I can take off both side covers, the right (as you sit) houses the clutch and the end of the secondary shaft, the left side has the alternator, never 'hand cranked' an engine, except by a kick start

Replaced starter clutch and solenoid, I can hear the click from that, when I put the secondary shaft back together it all felt 'secure'

Well it's worth getting familiar with it. You need to, in order to check the valve clearances.

So it won't start and even if you could get it going the brakes don't work.

And it might be seized, sounds like a great bike!!

Have a look here under checking valve clearances.

She was a basket case trike, I know she was running about 12 months ago, via a bump start, but she's been stood ever since, until I bought her, I've put her back together, with a complete Rewire, just need to get her to start on the button, then I'll sort the timing, carbs etc and the brakes

If the starter motor spins but doesn't turn the engine over your issue lies within the starter clutch. If the engine was seized the starter motor would not spin. Well it might for a short while but would make a god awful screeching noise as the starter clutch dogs scraped over the shaft.
Take off the points / electronic ignition cover and try turning the crank over with a spanner. If its tight, as said above take the plugs out, you should be able to turn it over with a spanner very easily with no plugs in it.
When you replaced the starter clutch did you use a replacement kit or did you buy the whole unit? The kits are notorious for being utter ste and a waste of money.
If it ran 12 months ago and no one has touched the valves or cams since it will having nothing to do with those.

Damn, it was just the rollers, caps and springs, thought that would be enough, I'll crank it over on Thursday, now I know how, thanks btw smile
It couldn't be the drive pinion on the end of the starter motor?
And is a complete starter clutch any better than just the components?

Unlikely to be the starter pinion but anythings possible. Easy to check the starter though just whip it out and check it over. My bet is on the replacement starter clutch st kit.
Once you have established it turns over ok you'll know where the issue is.
Yes a complete starter clutch is many many times better than the kit components. I would NEVER use a just the replacements in a kit. I have several 70's Kawasaki's and had to replace starter clutches numerous times in the 40 odd years of ownership. On a daily rider I wouldn't expect one to last more than 2 or 3 years. Whenever I pick up a new bike its one of the first things I do. Luckily, all mine are toys now and only get used a few times a year so, fingers crossed, the starter clutch's will out last me.

Hya, thanks for that, can you recommend somewhere to get the complete unit from? Looking on line all I can find are the bits I already purchased, or second hand units, don't know if they would be good or bad

Ordered and received a new starter gear, fitted and now she turns over!!

But.... She still won't start, there is no spark at any of the 4 plugs, bought new plugs, still the same, spoke to Z power again and he thinks that it would be rare for both coils not to work
Put my multi meter across the low tension of the first coil and got a reading of 2 ohms, (which I should get) put it from low tension to high and I'm getting nothing?

I'm going to run some tests on the Ignitor, fingers crossed.....

Getting good resistance from the Ignitor, corresponding with the figures in the book, I can stop sweating a bit now, don't have to spend £600 on a new one.... Still stuck tho....?

Good news re the starter clutch. Bad about the spark! That sounds about right for renovationsbiggrin
Those coils don't fail as in stop working instantly, they tend to fade away. Don't know much about electronic ignition as mine are all points condensors.
On one of the forums I use there was a guy with a gpz1100 with the same issue, he swopped in a points condensor set up and it instantly solved it. Not saying there is anything wrong with your electronic ignition but we couldn't find a fault with his either. (Apart from no spark!).
Double check your wiring for loose or dirty connections in the ignition system as I have also heard low voltage input into these systems can stop them working. I would start at the coils and work backwards checking each terminal for voltage and continuity. Once you find where the connection becomes "live" you'll know where the fault is. If its still not live when you get back to the ignition plate and it is live into it you'll know the ignition system is duff.
Where in the uk are you? I probably have a spare timing plate with good points and condensors in one of the parts bins.

Yeah, that sounds like my next job, tracing the wires! I'm just outside of Wisbech, Cambs, if that's any where near smile
