So on a dual carriage way thought 50 or 60 limit (non residential), camera van i assume got me doing say 56 or 57 mph in what i now see is a 40 limit, looking at fines on RAC it says a 4 - 6 points and £1k fine (based on my earnings). Is this true, never ever had any points, so annoying and potentially eye watering expensive! Anyone recently had a similar fine based on the new rules.

Cheers

Was the signage visible or was there something that prevented you from noticing it?

Small sign on side of road, just didn't notice it (sure it used to be 60).

Surely at that speed they should offer you a speed awareness course.

Not according to guidelines, it falls within the naughty boy category and fines of up to £1k and 4-6 points. Happy to take my punishment, i'm normally more observant but assuming a non residential dual carriageway is 50 or 60 was my downfall.

Too fast for an awareness course, not fast enough to be proceeded straight to court.

Expect FPN of 3 points & £100.

Ah thanks mate, website speed calculators had me a little concerned with new guidelines, lesson learned!

Well unfortunately you did not see the sign so did not knowingly speed...you need to sharpen up your suspicious "van" by roadside observation skills though...

My wife in a moment of madness recently got caught for doing 53 in a 30! She thought she would be sent to the tower, but she pleaded guilty straight away (doubt that had much to do with the processing though) and she ended up with £150 fine and 3 points...but her occupation is a housewife, so theoretically she has no income. We thought she got off quite lightly.

The terminal sign would be large, 600mm diameter.

You might find that they clocked you at lower than you thought. Or if you're really lucky they may not have got you at all.

Here's hoping for either of those! 24 years of motoring and no points... which is a small miracle in itself.

56 in a 40 will definitely get you a fine if you've been flashed by a camera-van. The most unfair fixed penalty notice I've received was for 38 in a 30 while on the 16-lane wide the approach to the M4 Severn toll booth. FPNs for speed used be 3 points (so 4 strikes you were off the road), these days speed limit infractions are a 4-point offence. Luckily, (depending on how you look at it), you will most likely be offered to do an AA speed awareness course at a cost of £100 to avoid the points. This is a once-off offer which you should take otherwise it's 3 strikes and you're off the road. Don't panic about points, take it on the chin. I recommend taking the speed awareness course, 4 hours long and you will actually learn something. I'm 20 years driving and my awareness improved since the course, and critically, no points since. Just make sure that you plan your journey on the day, I flashed another camera on my way to the course!!

I got nabbed for 56 in a 40 limit on a dual carriageway last year, ended up with a fixed penalty i.e. 3 points + £100 fine. SAC was not offered despite optimisticly ticking the box on the form.

If in doubt contact agtlaw on here.

P.S. The insurance company will want to know the offence code, wasn't on the paperwork I received, ended having to make an enquiry to the DVLA to find out what it was.

I'm surprised no ones mentioned yet how bloody dangerous you were and how you deserve to be done for it!

I'd imagine an instant ban and 3-4 months jail time.

My work here is done, now back to mumsnet.
