Looking at the quoted diesel economy figures for series 4 pre-2017, you get amazed with really high figures (some going upto 78mg). However, the latest series 4 tend to have more realistic figures (max in the 50s). Surely these are all same engines?

So whats happened? Have the engines changed drastically post 2017 or have they decided to provide more accurate and real figures?

The new figures are based on new European real world tests rather than a less likely test scenario that was used to calculate the economy of cars in years gone by. So the 78 mpg was never really achievable in real world driving

So it could be that they adjusted the computer to show more or near accurate figures after they all got caught fiddling the emission figures?

No, the test procedure changed. This change was already planned. The quoted figures for that vehicle type were done to the mpg test cycle that existed at the time. As stated by another poster above, the test cycle has recently been revised to be more representative. Even now, as was then, they can only be used for comparisons between different vehicles.

Yesterday I did nottingham and back to west London in my F30 30d and showed 56.6 MPG ...that is why I think the engine in this is as good as it gets power/mpg ratio and would never bother with a 2ltr derv

I've done Preston to Dolgellau and back with my M140i showing 47mpg maintaining motorway and a-road speeds. Runs with absolutely no acceleration or speed changes mean nothing.
