Hello all,

Hopefully someone can help. My sister has a 2012 Polo 6R with the 60ps 3 pot 1.2 petrol.

The car sees no love and hasn't been very well looked after, can't remember the last time she had it serviced but the oil is full, so at least there's that...

It's thrown a check engine light this morning, I initially thought plugs or coils but I've been reading and I believe these engines may be chain driven... Now I'm fearing the worst as there is a tractor-ish rattle on start up.

Going over after work to give it a check with the old cheapy OBD dongle. Would the car throw a code for a streched chain?

She's just agreed the mortgage on her ideal house yesterday so not ideal timing! Pardon the pun.

It would if it's far enough out of spec. The ECU correlates the crank and cam angles to measure chain wear. When it reaches a certain threshold, the CEL will likely come on. I would get it scanned first before fearing the worst.

Hopefully the Torque pro app can pick up on that, worst case scenario it may be the chain but I'd guess that it won't have bent anything yet.

Right... Checked the oil and it's now sitting on the minimum at cold which is strange, 2 months ago it was full.

Also scanned for codes and got a P0341 which is the camshaft position sensor. As far as I understand this may be due to a chain which has skipped teeth or the sensor itself. Is there a quick and easy way to confirm either way? Don't have access to a voltmeter.
