Budget watches for 40th
Discussion
Hi all
I've been reading here for a few weeks but this is my first post - just looking for some general advice...
I'm going to be 40 this year and I would like to buy 2 watches that I can pass down to my sons one day. Due to certain constraints I'm on quite a tight budget.
I'd like them to be similar to the Omega de ville blue face if possible, I'm not after a diver.
Should I be looking at automatics or would a quartz be better? Metal bracelet preferred and I would absolutely consider 2nd hand.
Budget will probably be less than 500 for the both. Any suggestions?
Many thanks!

My first suggestion:

Seiko Presage Cocktail Time. Looks stunning in the flesh for the price. Automatic movement. Probably can find it a bit cheaper than £300.
Quite similar to the Omega you mention, to my eyes. Leather bracelet rather than metal but could be swapped.

Here it is on a bracelet:

Buying from Creation is another conversation but it shows what it looks like on a bracelet. Very, very nice in my opinion.
To add, if you can stretch the budget take a look at something like the Tissot Powermatic or Hamilton Jazzmaster. The bracelet is always a bit more expensive than a strap and therefore for the money you are getting a bit less watch.

I would imagine you could pick up a couple of 70s/ 80s Omegas for £500 from eBay.

Or something completely different. They are so cool.

Seiko and Orient make bloody lovely watches.
I would imagine that they would have more sentimental than monetary value in the future for your kids, but that shouldn’t put you off.
The things are made to be worn and Japanese watches are robust and delightful.
Something like an Orient Mako and a Seiko Presage would be a nice combination!
Best of luck in your search!

I have a Mako II and it is superb.
Orient are part of Seiko iirc so the quality is much the same. Also love my seikos but I won't b
ks on about them.Id suggest looking at Christopher ward

They make very nice watches, both come with a blue face. I have the C1 grand malvern (https://www.christopherward.co.uk/watches/dress/c1-grand-malvern-range) but thats out of budget.
There is a good forum where 2nd hand watches often come up for sale. ww.christopherwardforum.com
Its a nice idea with the watch. When I turned 18 my Nan got myself and my brother matching watches (1 blue face, 1 silver face), they were cheapish Festina watches but 15 years later I still have it and wouldnt ever get rid.

Try looking at Bulova.
Their precisionist (aka 262kHz) range have beautiful smooth sweep second hands, high accuracy (10s per year) and quartz power so you don't need to keep them wound.
Some very nice iconic styles too (lunar pilot and oceanographer for example).
