MK1 Foci whilst amazing cars suffer terminal rust.

Spend £800-£1000 on the very best MK4 Golf you can find and then spend the balance of your budget getting it into tip-top condition. They don't suffer terminal rust but the front wings can and do rust / get scabby. This is no more than cosmetic and very easy to fix. A pair of pre-painted wings can be obtained for about £200.

There are a few MK4 Golf readers cars threads running on here for inspiration.

From a reliability point of view, go for the PD GT TDI, preferably the 130hp version or the 1.8 turbo petrols, available either with 150 or 180hp.

I also have a sneaking suspicion (obviously an unproven fantasy at this time) that the MK4 will become a modern classic and be admired almost as much as the MK2 currently is.

I'd be looking at a Mk2 Focus in your budget having had two myself over the years they have been very reliable cars with good space inside, never had one that suffered from rust particularly, both mine were petrol and manuals but there's loads of the things for sale on autotrader of every trim level including autos for under 2 grand.
