I am so so fed up lately of my body.

I am trying to do better for myself, trying to go to the gym, choosing gentle exercises, eating well.

Yet my effin body has absolutely tons of problems that i cant even work around anymore. I hate being skinny so i dont want to give up weight training yet everything is getting worse.

My knee hurts when i squat/climb stairs/go down stairs (been told i have patellofemoral syndrome).

My elbow tendons snap over the bone during ANY pushing exercise, basically meaning the only chest/shoulders exercises i can do are isolation-chest flys/lateral raises etc, i was offered surgery to cut the nerve which im not happy with getting as it sounds risky and it seems odd ive suddenly developed this snapping the last 2 years and not had it for the past 10 or so years.

My shoulder has impingement meaning it gets caught every time i do a rep of lateral raise unless i bring the weights forward a bit.

My scapula crunches and catches when doing any shoulder exercise.

Tricep exercises consist of rope pull downs with a limited range of movement as anything more makes them snap.

Everytime i leave the gym i have pulled my middle traps on one side of my back.

fk me sounds even worse when i write it down!!

Help.

Oh i forgot to mention i also have a stiff lower back most days and sciatica.

Diet? To have all that going on in your 20s suggests problems with your diet if not hereditary. Are you ensuring your body is getting all the vitamins it needs?

Have you been for a full check-up with your GP, blood & urine tests etc?

Diet? With all due respect but how would what i eat cause shoulder impingement, snapping triceps, scapula crunching and sciatica?

I dont have the answers but i really really dont see a link between diet and tendons snapping over places they shouldent, back problems and misalignment. Makes no sense at all to link it to food.

The negative feeling you have around your body and physical fitness needs an integrated approach to sort out. I feel you will benefit from getting some expert intervention. Physio, strength coach, psychotherapist. Do your research, find people who have the right experience and qualifications, and trust their advice. It's important to recognise that the vicious circle you are currently in, is as much a psychosocial issue as it is physical. You are motivated to improve, which is an excellent starting point smile

And do get reviewed by GP to rule out other issues.

Thank you, my main concern is ive got no chance getting a physio to look at so many problems at once and if they will ill have to go private, wont get all of it looked at on the nhs. Will a chiropractor help to 'realign me' possibly.

No.

Get some rest. Go and see a GP. It will take time to work through the physical stuff that's plaguing you but you have to rule out any medical issues before looking at other potential causes such as poor exercise technique. Unless you have emotional issues that compound the situation you do not need a psychotherapist.

Starting point for some of the snapping issues.

I've had similar with tricep push downs and the position of your wrists is really important, it's in one of those Athlean x videos. I changed technique as per his video and it went.

You'd have to be incredibly lucky to have no issues at all with you body, so I'd get to grips with the reality that you are going to find problems as you develop your training, but it shouldn't stop you being fit and healthy, there's always a work around.

A lot of your complaints could just be the result of years of bad posture and muscle imbalances. Shoulder impingement, for instance, can improve massively with just a few exercises, you may find once that is working properly, the rest of you scapula clicking goes.

Top of you list to get checked out should be your lower back and sciatica. Muscle guarding and spasm etc relating to that could be the cause of some of your issues elsewhere in the body.

I would try your GP first, but I think physio usually has a pretty long waiting list. If you can afford it, I would look for a decent physio in the interim.

Good ole Popeyewhite. You're such an expert; I've no idea why anyone else bothers contributing.

As a qualified psychotherapist I feel able to comment.

If you don't like others publishing different opinions to yours perhaps you might avoid open forums? smile

Fix one problem at a time- I’d bet there’s an interrelation between them all. When the bigger problems are solved, the smaller ones likely will be too.

Working out your own age would seem to be the best place to start

If it does bother you enough to seek professional help, paying a few bob rather than waiting is surely worth it?

I'm not sure what your problem is Pops, but you do seem to have an issue with me and my posts in particular.

The biopsychosocial model is a widely accepted and evidence-based approach to modern patient-centred care. If you're not able to draw the obvious inferences between the OP's requests for help and the emotional states that will have led up to this point, I suspect your empathy is somewhat lacking - perhaps because you can't see past your need to object to my posts?

Whatever, though.

OP, very best of luck however you choose to approach this.

I think if you're interested in keeping fit life beyond 30 is pretty much all about maintenance of repeated and ongoing injuries, niggles and genetics.

A positive mental attitude helps but that's not always easy as so many things can just get you down. It's like come on body I'm trying to do the right thing, keep it fit and then bam another gripe crops up.

I was diagnosed with oedema of the articular cartilage in both knees at 36. The furthest I'd ever run was about 4 miles. I was told to stop running and do something else. Which I did for a while but I still run (further than I ever have - cross country half marathons etc). I ibruprofen up before a long run now and ice when I get back.

Lots of Epsom salt baths can help too.

I suffer from lipomas (fatty growths under the skin which appear randomly on arms and back) which I have to fight with the GP to get a private healthcare referral to remove them every couple of years.

The tendons in my left arm play up no end when frequenting the gym. Ibruprofen and ice if they get really bad but the right levels of rest really help too.

I suffer migraines are the slightest thing which I have to constantly manage and they've gotten persistenly worse with age.

It's a constant battle of recurring and new injuries to deal with. Physio sessions have helped and talking to others. Much of the locker room 40+ blokes chat is injury related these days!

Hang in there, work through the issues. Try to stay positive and seek the correct help.

I understand how you feel. I’m 31 now and after 5-6 years off the gym I’m trying to get back into it.

Had issues with nerve pain around ribs and now shoulder impingement. There’s a few videos on YouTube about hanging for shoulder health. I get a few odd pains that put me off but trying to push through it. I’m not necessarily mentally strong but trying to convince myself it’s in my head rather than my body. Hopefully it all works out as I feel so much better mentally and physically after a workout.

I wish I’d never given up and now I feel like I’m trying to play catch up.

Maybe an idea if you can afford it to go private for a while to a physiotherapist.
