Hi,

I am currently in the market for a used VW Golf GTI and recently looked at one at a VW dealer. It is an 18 plate with less than 5k miles and black. Upon inspecting the car everything was fine apart from a few long marks on two of the doors which really stood out. Obviously you have to expect this on used cars but these seemed quite bad to me and I noticed them straight away. Images:

Unfortunately these were the only two images I could get and I believe it looked a bit worse in person. To me personally they were worse than general wear and tear. The dealer said not to worry about these as they would come out in the valet. I tried moving my finger over them and couldn't feel it at all, there were no ridges or anything.

What do you think about these marks? Would this put you off purchasing? Or do you believe they're not to bad and will come out? Is there anything I can do to guarantee they can get them out before putting down a deposit?

Thank you all and help appreciated!

A proper mop by someone who knows what they’re doing will get rid of those.

But be warned, buying a black car leads to a lifetime of keeping on top of the paintwork to avoid this, best avoided if you can’t be arsed with it.

Look like they wil machine polish out to me so nothing much to worry about, just be clear with the dealer that you expect them gone when car is collected.

Those scratches aren't "bad", they will mop out easily, however as already mentioned; black is a nightmare for scratches, as soon as those are gone there will be others.

Black is the best colour on many cars by far. When cleaned and polished they looks the dogs.

2 mins later they get dirty and look awful.

At the bottom of the market buying a black car is fine. Buying an 18 reg then Black isn't an option simply due to the grief of keeping it clean and scratch free

I wouldn't bother having the dealer do anything with those, they'll probably just make a hash of any polishing and use some kind of filler glaze to hide it termporarily.

Get it to a half decent detailer (and potentially let them do the rest of the car - you won't regret it).

As others have mentioned those will polish out easily by someone who knows what they are doing with a machine polisher.
A word of warning if the dealer valeter attempts this it may end up in worse condition.

Shame the car is in this condition given the age/mileage, makes you wonder what the rest of the car looks like.

cheers

I wouldn't say that it is in a particulary bad condition for the age/mileage, they are just very fine scratches on a black car, if the car was any other colour they wouldn't be noticed.

I had a self confessed OCDer pick up a brand new car just before Christmas, the car was black, she found scratches that no normal person would find, she was a nightmare and bought totally the wrong colour of car for her condition.

Thank you everyone for your replies, from whats been posted the marks will come out but black is very prone to scratches so more will come along and I will have to keep on top of it. I'm going to have a think about and decide from there.

Thanks again everyone!
