Pick up as a company car?
Discussion
A mate of mine is considering jumping out of his A6 and into a Nissan navara as his next company car as the tax benefit are enormous.
He does about 25k a year and can often do 800 miles in a week.
I’ve never driven a pick up but how unrefined are they nowadays? He knows it won’t be an A6/5 series alternative but will he feel knackered after the working week.
He also likes to ‘press on’ a little bit and I guess this will definitely need to be reigned in?
I’m quite happy for him to get a pick up as it means I can take the piss out of him for being a builder for three years and will get much amusement out of it.
Any comments from people who have swapped from a conventional car to a pick up to save the BIK is most welcome.

Good friend switched from a X6M to a Navara and the financial aspect was huge. Big BIK benefits and said he loved the ability to throw anything in the back (golf s
te, tip runs, furniture etc).
Did however treat it as a van and as such became a moving trash bag. Wasnt by any means a bad place to be but nowhere near your usual German salesman cars. Last ~6 months

They are under 2040kg empty so the same limit as a car.
They all used to be but not so much now. From 2016 most of the Ford Rangers were overweight and we've had owners on the forums being done for speeding.
At last look at the current crop only some of the Super Cab Rangers, manual and at the low end of the range, were under. All the double cabs are now over.
Same seems to be true across most of the other makes too.
Some of us have gone mid-sector German (E Class) to extended test drive in pick-ups eg Amarok/Navara.
Not in a million years would I be covering 25K in a pick up. Comfort, acceleration, parking, image, fuel consumption at unofficial motorway speeds, etc, etc are just a no.
A friend has the MB X-Class and regrets it.
From a financial aspect they make sense but then so does a company motorcycle.

This is what I was telling him down the pub last night BUT it is just opinion from me as I’ve never driven a recent pick-up. It’s got all the kit but I still think it will be a dire drive and not relaxing.
If he doesn't need the rear seats look at a Land Rover Commercial, I ran one for two years as a company car was truly an excellent vehicle for my needs.
I removed the rear parcel bulkhead and there wasn't anything I couldn't get in the back of it - even used to sleep in the back sometimes if I was on long drives (Sweden for instance).
Drives exactly the same as the non commercial

I had a navara until last week. Did loads if trips between North West and Essex. Never had a problem with it from a comfort or ride perspective.
Only reason I swapped was my wife didn't like driving it as it was too big for her.
I loved the high driving position , would do 80mph all day, got 30+mpg, and was very comfortable. Ok it had a bit more body roll but as long as you were driving for it it's fine.
One of my favourite vehicles I've ever had, and would swallow a huge amount of stuff especially with a truckman hardtop in it

I've had a L200 Series 5 for the last 3 years and done 30k in it.
I wouldn't hesitate to jump in and drive 4/5/6 hours in one go (pee breaks notwithstanding).
Ride can be a bit choppy on rough roads (canopy helps to settle back end) but on motorways it's fine.
Sounds a bit agricultural on hard acceleration, but again settles at speed.
Has most of the toys you need, cruise, dual zone aircon, DAB, satnav, Android Auto/Carplay.
And < 2040kg so can do car speeds, plus run full time in 4Wd if the weather is inclement.
