Firstly, as I'm sure you are aware it is obscenely expensive for just about anything. When you're on a night out try and avoid the bars that are down by the docks as they are the most costly. There's an Irish bar down by the tunnel that has live music sometimes and the drinks are reasonably priced (relatively speaking).
Really there's not that much to do there to be honest. You can go down by the beach and do some sun bathing if you like that sort of thing. Outside of the GP race it's quite hum-drum. There's a few sites to see but not much.

Obviously, there's the casino if you want to spend /lose lots of money. The botanical gardens are quite nice but are right on the top of the mountain and a bugger to get to. It's worth seeing the change of guards at the palace - and the motor museum has a cracking collection of cars.
Walking the F1 circuit is pretty good too (or maybe just a bit sad!)

tsI hear Monaco's a good place to stay outside of and drive in. You'll find yourself more in favour if you have a more prestigious car (yep, it's like that) - easier to park outside restaurants and leave it there without bother, whereas if you stick a Fiat Uno there, they'll tow it. That's pretty much how to get free parking in Monaco.
I've only really been there once, and I just 'dropped in', so I'm not sure about accommodation, but I guess you have to suss out your drinks and so on. Nothing's got a price tag on it btw - if you need to ask you can't afford it, simple as that. Also, 'less glamorous' is a relative term here. The Monaco equivalent of a dive bar is on a par with the Ritz, so it's hardly a hardship if you're out looking for cheap booze.

There's a restaurant on the left at the bottom of the hill after the tunnel (where the chicane usually is) that doesn't look like much but does a cracking cheap'n'cheerful pizza and a pint of Heineken if you've blown all your beer vouchers - nice view of the harbour too if you bag the right table.

Not just me who was underwhelmed by Monaco then? Nice was (as you say) lovely. The beach is hilarious. It's pebble and shelves steeply into the sea, great for watching people (well... girls
) tottering about struggling to get in and out of the water. Some friends did the whole DJ and nice car thing in Monaco and had a great time though, so it might just be me (and tonker).
Stars n' Bars is probably one of the more lively bars in Monaco.
To those that mentioned Nice, I didn't go a bundle on the place, too much petty street crime for my liking, especially around the station.
The train from Monaco is nice if you have time - very scenic as it follows the coastline.
Walk up the hill to the Palace - great views.
Fontvielle - the newer part of Monaco the other side of the hill where the palace is on - has a McDonalds in case you feel the need for a cheap meal!!! Has probably one of the most scenic views for a McD's!
Pick up one of the free maps when you get there or from the airport or something - shows all the lifts and tunnels if you are walking Monaco - plus has all the ads for the bars etc on.

Cheaper alternative, and imo, MUCH nicer than Nice is Menton. Has a train link into Monaco or about 10 mins by car, really nice little town and hotels overlooking the beach. Some great restaurants there too.

Funnily enough, I was discussing this with a mate the other day who fancies getting some like-minded hooners together for a bit of a G.T. once we'd got, err, 'suitable' cars (not necessarily expensive, but different).
He's been to Monaco a few times, and recommends staying either on the outskirts of Nice, or in a Monaco Travelodge (yes, so it's a Travelodge, but compared to the other prices round there it's very reasonable).
He also said that Monaco exhausts itself rather quickly, so make it the destination of a tour rather than the sole location. And don't bother buying anything. If you are going to spend money, splash out on 'experiences' - fine wine and food, a flutter at a casino and so on.
Apparently, half the fun of Monaco is trying to con people into thinking you're richer than you are. The people there are, in many cases, very shallow and materialistic, but obviously couldn't spot a fake Rolex or a cheap yet well-looked after classic car from their own status symbols. I myself fancy going down there in a £10k replica Lamborghini Miura from Prova-Lamberti, fitted with an Alfa Romeo V6 and authenticated as closely as possible at home, just to see how many posh venues I could park it outside to see how many admiring glances I collected from the staff etc, and not get moved on by the valets.
We do fancy having a night-time race round the GP circuit (in dinner jackets!) though
