Not much chance of him signing a book in 2011......
I'd be looking for a Desert Airforce or Far East Airforce Hurricane pilot, rather than a Battle of Britain era hurricane pilot.
Only 2 BofB Hurricane pilots called Simpson survived the war, and one of them died in 1987.
The other was Flt. Lt. John William Charles Simpson DFC, of 43 Sqn.

An off the wall Simpson who had connections with Hurricanes is Simpson's Aero Services of Elstree who serviced them during the making of the film Battle of Britain.
Just saw their name when trawling through Simpson's on the web. No further info though. The company doesn't appear to still exist.

Someone earlier suggested it could be FL Simpson... Flt. Lt. Simpson......No one who was ex-RAF would sign F L like that for Flt/Lt.

The only other Simpson I've been able to dig up has the wrong initials.

A test pilot for Hawker Siddeley (the successors to Hawkers) who was still alive in 2011. The other question I have is what does 'Norman' mean. It would be reasonable for it to be a place but there doesn't appear to be any towns or villages in the UK with that name. They're mostly in the US.
In actual fact, the Hawker Siddeley group was already in existence in the 1930s although the constituent companies kept their separate names until the early 1960s. The original Hawker Siddeley group included Hawker, Avro, Armstrong Whitworth and Gloster.
de Havilland was absorbed into the group in 1960 and their separate identity was lost in 1963.

Looks more like an 'S' than an 'N' to me - compare with the second 'S' in Simpson, and the other 'N' in the mystery word - although it doesn't make any sense that way!951TSE said:

I didn't bother to mention Duncan Simpson, as apart from being the wrong initials, I'm familiar with his signature, and knew it wasn't his.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duncan_Simpson

Seems like this could be a bit of a mystery then.I did wonder about the Norman part of it myself and thought maybe it was a gift from a friend but as far as we know he didn't have any friends called Norman.I think i'll look into the far east and desert side of it a bit more if i can and see if there's anything there that could shed some light.Thank you all for your suggestions so far.
