Holocaust memorial - does Britain need one?
Discussion
Some arguing about this going in a Westminster park

Surely it should be in a country a few hundred miles away?

What’s your objection ?https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-47189...

The aesthetics of the proposed monument ?
The location and associated disruption mentioned in the article ?
The idea behind recognising the holocaust in London ?

was there one??Are you going to answer the question properly ?
Let's keep the park looking like a park?
- otherwise over time there could be all sorts of worldly events that might be considered worthwhile to take a space
No disprespect to a memorial in its place.
I personally dislike that proposed design. There are already two permanent memorial centres in the UK, one within the Imperial War Museum and the other at the Beth Shalom Holocaust Centre near Laxton in North Notts where people can visit to learn about what happened (as well as the actual memorial in Hyde Park) both of which are very sobering when you spend time there.

The issue of location therefore is surely a red herring if that is your underlying perspective ?
Memorials need to be “of a place”, otherwise it just degrades their impact. Put a Holocaust memorial in Berlin, sure, it’s relevant. Less relevant in London. Otherwise you get memorials to every event in history all over the place.
There is also a lot of value in keeping the park as it is - a big green space. I don’t have a problem with a Holocaust memorial in itself, it’s obsession with concreting over every bit of space that grates with me.

Totally agree with this. Why not plant a few million flowers or something - something that can be kept growing. Pop a little plaque near them noting the significance and job done.
I also tend to agree with the angle on "of a place". There have been lots of pretty heinous acts in the world over the last couple of thousand years. Where do we stop?

Absolutely not
This kind of thinking intrigues me.Britain does absolutely not need another holocaust memorial ?
Could you explain why you think that ?
Because we have sufficient or it is not something you believe should be memorialised here ?
Some other reason ?
Genuinely interested in the thinking behind such a statement.
