EGR Recall - 640d - some waiting on parts since December
Discussion
Hi
Had letter, took it in today, advised mine affected. Asked how long, told some affected cars are still there since December 2018 waiting on the parts which are on back order... Cars stored outside for 2 months without moving, not exactly ideal for a car used everyday up until now.
Asked to sign a disclaimer if I want the car back...
Car owned outright so I don't really want it sat for months outside and I don't really want to sign any disclaimer of any sort. BMW ar$e covering so why should I start accepting any liability?
Anyone else in this boat? No one will give me a lead time on parts.....
Thanks

Leave it sitting for an unknown time period (which may or may not be two months, some of it is down to luck more than anything) v a potential molten inlet manifold, smoke and potential fire at the front end?
I know which way I would be going. Furthermore, the disclaimer in my view is entirely justified considering the potential risk the part failure has on other components (in this case the inlet manifold).

Fair enough.I know which way I would be going. Furthermore, the disclaimer in my view is entirely justified considering the potential risk the part failure has on other components (in this case the inlet manifold).
I've had car 3 years, driven over 30k miles invluding trips on the continent at prolonged high speed during high temperature seasons. I live 3 miles from Dealership, I think its fair to keep my car at home until part arrives and drive the courtesy car. In terms of the disclaimer, never accept sign for liability on anything you don't have to in life.

It'll still be sat for months waiting for parts whether it's at the dealer or at home.If it is going to be left at the dealership, get them to do a condition report on the car when you leave it there (and take photos) - so there's no argument about dents/scratches/etc. when you come to pick it up.
Can be sat with the trickle charger on, brimmed with fuel. Every few days it can go up and down the road without getting any serious temperature into the components but still keeping everything moving. I don't have to worry about condition in this scenario.
The cars have that gone up in smoke seem to be based in South Korea this summer where it got up to 38c so the likelihood of anything happening even if I kept using it as normal is minimal. I will however be running round in whatever Enterprise deliver tomorrow but I'm happy to have the car where I can see it and also to have not signed the disclaimer from the BMW.

Just got my 435d back, dealership had the car for 3.5 weeks and it was kept inside and had the battery voltage monitored and charged within that time. I have worked for the dealership in a third party capacity and know a few of the service staff and so have no reason to doubt what I got told.
I had a Nissan Qasquai (sp. ?) 1.5dci that was comfortable enough but was dog slow.

Wow now if id been promised that then i wouldnt have had an issue!! Sounds very good. When it went in did they give you any indication of timeframe ?I had a Nissan Qasquai (sp. ?) 1.5dci that was comfortable enough but was dog slow.
I had the letter at the weekend aswell, not acted upon it as yet.
When I do I will ask the dealer to book me in when they have the part in stock - I can't just leave my car there for X number of weeks until they get the part?!
I'm not worried that my car will go up in flames in the meantime to be honest.
EDIT - are they actually offering you a courtesy car whilst they wait for parts? I'm normally advised there are no courtesy cars available for weeks when I try and book in service work with my local BMW dealer?!

I get the impression that without checking the car they won't order the part, then if they say your affected, they don't want to release the car. So good luck with it.When I do I will ask the dealer to book me in when they have the part in stock - I can't just leave my car there for X number of weeks until they get the part?!

I wasn't worried either btw!

Nope the initial inspection is to check the EGR cooler you won't necessarily get it replaced. Parts are ordered by each individual chassis number so BMW can track them now. If there is no evidence of problems it will be released. If there is then the parts order starts then. When I do I will ask the dealer to book me in when they have the part in stock - I can't just leave my car there for X number of weeks until they get the part?!

It is not a courtesy car. It is a hire car from Enterprise. It seems pot luck on what you get. But my view anything to keep me mobile is fine, more so when the part is about £600 - £700 fitted + hire car charges.
Got my 2012 F11 booked in for the check on 24th April. Only offer of a courtesy car was for the day its booked in. No symptoms so not overly concerned but I will be keeping an eye on it. Just about to tick over 100k miles so maybe its had it done previously. See what the result is in 2 and a half months time!

Mines a 2012 F11 535d and it was fine. The affected parts are on later models I believe.Took my 61 plate 525d in on the 1st of feb and was told it’s to be kept in. Was initially given a manual vx mokka after telling them I needed an auto! Had that for a week and now got an Astra. The mokka was an awful thing but the Astra is fine. Just spoke to bmw today and said they’re hoping to have the part on the 15th feb but not guaranteed so hopefully have mine back soon.
Mine recently has had the eml light and drivetrain message intermittently light up which are listed as part of the symptoms so hopefully it was and not something else.

took my 2013 535d in yesterday and mine was bad apparently told enterprise I needed an auto the same size as my 5er was told they only had a Hyundai i20. said im not driving that so gave me a 1.0 ecoboost fiesta manual for the night and changing it today. was told could be 3-4 weeks but may be longer. at the minute ive got a hire car booked for 21 days
no. its a £500 excess but was told they normally do an additional cover for £9.99 a day to cover all excess. but would do it for me for £6.99 and cap it at 10 days no matter how long I had the car for. I said do it for £50 and ill have it. atleast now I have piece of mind and can drive the hire car how a hire car should be driven

I was not asked for any additional payment or made aware of any extras I could have taken. Also mine is open ended it would seem so I may be in this Mondeo for a while. No mileage restriction either. Seems a good deal unless some things been hidden which I doubt they have. The service was Enterprise was A+
According to BMW UK, they band the vehicle you own/lease and then match it to one of Enterprises bands so 5 series drivers shouldn't be in Fiestas! I'd be phoning BMW if they put me in an i20 or Fiesta.
