I will be buying my son his first car later this year. I'm think of spending around £8. I've seen a 2012 golf 1.4 but have no idea how difficult its going to be to get insurance. Would a Polo be a better option? Suggestions gladly welcomed!

£8 really isn't going to go far...

Get insurance quotes for several different cars and base your choice on that.

For my kids, the cheapest cars were Ford KA, Corsa, Micra. The Polo might be ok, but I would assume the Golf would be £1500-2000 for a first year.

Best way to check is get on a comparison site, and get a quote set up , then try a selection of cars to see if you can find something sensible.

Worth chucking in a few oddballs too, like a few bigger older cars. But, if he really doesn't deserve a lot... https://ebay.us/AiIoaH

Back when I was a teen everyone kept on banging on about how engine size affected insurance rates.

I got quotes and I found engine size had very little impact on the price so don't get too caught up on trying to scour the four corners of the world trying to find the smallest engine known to man.

I remember quotes for the Ford Focus with engines 1.4/1.6/1.8/2.0 were penny for penny identical.

Your best bet will be to get insurance quotes for a Golf and Polo from an insurance comparison site so you can see what the difference is.

Never buy through phone insurance brokers. They are told to start with the most expensive quote and if you don't buy they will phone back in 5 minutes with a cheaper quote. All they do is give you the 2nd most expensive quote and slowly work their way down the list trying to charge as much as possible. I know people who did this and their advice is always buy through price comparison websites.

After being quoted £2,200 to insure my 17 year old to drive my 1990 Mini as a new driver we bought him a Aygo.

£800 with a black box and dead cheap to run - great little car and ideal to keep him out of bother as he builds up no claims
