E46 M3 mirror internals

My drivers side mirror hasn’t gone up with the other one for some time. I’ve read it’s probably down to a stripped cog on the inside - there are fix kits for this but I’d like to check before I order something.

Is there a way to get to see the internals without breaking the mirror glass?
Can I take the casing off without stripping the inner door card and unbolting the whole thing from the body?

I would suggest going onto M3Cutters and contacting MirrorJohn. He has come up with multiple ways to fix e46 M3 mirrors, internal and external. I think he got new stronger cogs for the outside mirrors made.

They’re an odd bunch over there. I got my replacement rear view mirror from John so I’ll give him a call.

Most likely the cog, just don’t buy a brass one as they are too soft and you’ll be doing the job again (no need to ask how I know). Get a proper steel replacement. Easy enough fix tbh
