Music for trumpet - suggestions

My son has been playing the trumpet for 5+ years now - he's 14yo and is really good now but his teacher is rather stuck in the traditional orchestral style. He's a good teacher though so I don't want to change him but my lad has become more aware of contemporary styles. Through listening to my tastes in the car, he has playlists made up of all-sorts from the 1960s to today and has aspirations to join a band.

I suggested trying some of the early James Bond themes like OHMSS and Goldfinger, and The Ecstasy of Gold from the end of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (starts with a clarinet piece but a trumpet and muffler make a good show of that). He plays these really well and is asking for more ideas.

Can you suggest anything please?

Nothing wrong with classical training there is lots of music out there.
Have a chat with his teacher about this - although contemporary pop music doesn't really lend itself to the trumpet.

What is your sons ability and range? Has he done any graded exams?

You could look at the ABRSM graded jazz books for a different style.
Ask Nicecupoftea on here - he might have some better ideas than me.

I'm a woodwind person not brass, so I don't know how well music transposes across those different instruments but if he wants something funky, have a look at Trombone Shorty.

There are lots of youth jazz orchestras - normally one per county district.

So for instance
SYJO = Surrey Youth Jazz Orchestra
TYJO = Tamar Youth Jazz Orchestra

These are a great place for players in their mid teens to 'cut their teeth' and realise how good other players that age around them are!
The MD's are normally really good and the better players normally end up in NJYO (National).

Not exactly pop music but its a different genre and different circle of players.
Pop wise - isn't there some ensembles at school with the DOM can arrange for him to be part of?

I played the trumpet at school and in the school orchestra.

Sadly this was very "classical" focussed and I found the parts in Mozart, Beethoven etc were very limiting. You would essentially sit there, count 34 bars untill a loud bit and then play a single note at the end of a section: "tan taran taran taran tadaaa!"" The violins and strings used to get all the fun stuff! I think this was because back when they were written, the trumpets were pretty crude and didn't have a lot of range, adn were quite unsubtle so their parts were quite simple and were just used to provide volume adn drama.

I did enjoy a bit of Handel and Haydn though They wrote some good parts for trumpet and some decent of concertos where I could play solo which was a great chance to cut loose.

Big band and swing stuff used brass to much better effect, with some great harmonies and arrangements, not all about high notes and solos. I did a bit of this at school which was a great. I really enjoyed playing some Count Basie & Bennie Goodman where the brass section comes into its own, and Harry James for some quality 40s & 50's era swing style.
