So we get this one star review (our only one):

Booked to play Sunday at 11 but when got there the course was closed due to rain the night before , we turned up not knowing it was shut and lost a days golf when we could of booked somewhere else. I would of expected a phone call because they expect u to cancel if u not turning up for ur tee time . Golf shop shut and bloke behied bar no help at all !!!

I want to reply:

Thanks for your one star review, I am sorry you could not play golf. However the country was going through a major storm, it even had a name 'Erik'. All of our local courses were closed, there was flooding, 85mph winds, and three people died. We do call guests, and we have a system that when we change the status of the course emails golfers with updates. Unfortunately we did not have your mobile number or email, so we could not get I touch (we are looking into why not). Maybe you could have called before setting out considering the major storm the country was going through at the time? If you would like to get in touch we would like to offer you a free 4 ball so you can enjoy the course in sunshine....

Too passive aggressive for me.

Cut out the irrelevant bits and emotional tugs, keep it short and sweet.

So: Storm Erik, No phone number left, apologies you could not play.

i'd leave out the sarcasm and just explain about the storm - then allow anyone reading to make their own mind up about the reviewers common sense

i also wouldn't reward negative reviewers, you may start getting more off people who are after a free 4 ball!!!!!

Were the people that died in your area? If not, that seems bit much and shouldn't be in there imo. The rest of it sounds fine though.

On a related note, every hotel, golf Course restaurant etc has the odd bad review. a well worded reply like yours would actually make me more likely to visit as that customer is obviously just a pain and you have replied accordingly

I know you are right - that's why I said that's what I want to write, not what I will write !

We're really sorry you were unable to play and unfortunately we didn't have contact details for your group. Thankfully such disruptions are exceptionally rare and we'd be delighted for another opportunity to welcome you to the club with a 4 ball on us.

Or just ring Google and say you are considering spending £££s on advertising and would prefer to start with a clean page. Poof, the review is gone.

You really come across as a tt in that response you're proposing.... I definitely wouldn't go down that route.

It was your fault that this happened so just accept the 1* as well deserved and move on from it and learn something. You should have had contact details, put processes in place so that you don't ever end up with an uncontactable booking again.

I am sorry you could not play golf. There was a major storm on the day you were booked "Storm Erik". Due to the flooding and 85mph winds we were forced to close. We do try to call all guests who are booked in however due to the circumstances on the day this was not possible and we will look to improve that for the future. If you would like to get in touch we would like to offer you a free 4 ball so you can enjoy the course in sunshine....

Something simpler?

Please accept our apologies that you could not play golf at your chosen date and time.

All of our local courses were closed due to storm Erik, and there was flooding and 85mph wind.

We do have a system that automatically notifies guests when we change the status of the course. Unfortunately, in this case, no contact information was found, so this system could not contact you to notify you of the closure.

We'd be happy to discuss booking you in for a complimentary 4-ball at a date & time of your choosing, so that you can enjoy the course during much more enjoyable conditions.

I wouldn't offer anything free. Just mention the storm, that courses were shut and that they didn't leave contact details.

"Sorry we were shut, next time there is a major storm with torrential rain and high winds we will notify you and you can have a full 18 round free on us, you will have to bring your own wet weather gear however"
