Just bought myself a new motor and thought I'd share.

I've had a couple of M cars in the past (E46 M3 which I loved & an E92 M3 which was a little underwhelming). I've been tooling around in an old 330d Touring for the last 18 months. Anyway, I fancied a change and ended up in an M2, initial thoughts are that it's fricking awesome.

It's like a modern E46 on steroids ... for my tastes it's a far better motor than the E92 even if it doesn't rev to 8k.

I'd been watching this particular car at a local independent for a number of weeks .... which turned into months. I went to look at it a couple of times but didn't commit, I finally decided I'd have it so called and put in a daft offer which on the basis they'd had it 4 months they reluctantly accepted.

6000 miles, 1 private owner, DCT plus some options = £33k. A bargain I think.

Anyway, obligatory snap:

If you don't mind me asking, how do you find :-
(1) the seats compared to the E46 M3 in terms of support, comfort and adjustability.
(2) The driving position compared to the E46 M3
(3) The throttle response compared to the E46 M3 AND E92 335i?

It's done less than 3k miles per year. It may be two years old but that's low miles.

Seems a good deal. We buy any car value it at £31,145

They value my Feb 18 67 plate M2 LCI DCT with 14k miles at £32,135

Nice car

As an aside, I had PN57 CXX back when it was new. Not identical but pretty close.

I often wonder why the same letter combinations seem to crop up fairly frequently.

Hmmm ... difficult questions to answer as I haven't driven any of them back to back and there are a few years between ownership .... plus I haven't driven the M2 enough yet (less than 100 miles in).

Initial impressions:
1) The bolster support isn't as good as any of the E46 M3 / E92 M3 or even my previous E91 330d Tourer. I'm a slim guy and the bolsters don't pump up enough in the M2 and aren't as large as any of my previous BMW cars so don't hold you in place as well. Comfort and adjust-ability feel on-par.

2) No significant difference that I recall .... both perfectly fine.

3) Much better than E92 335i but not as good as an E46/E92 M3 as you'd expect really. very good though in sport / sport +

For me the questions you've asked are the least noticeable differences in between the cars.

Forgetting the 335i and just comparing M cars .... the M2 feels massively muscular compared to the M3's due to the swell of torque meaning fast B road driving is much easier and for me more enjoyable (as it's very hard to use all the revs on the road in either M3)

The steering is also much keener on initial turn in which surprised me.

The E92 always felt like a very heavy intimidating car to me …. The E46 less so but still to be respected … the impression I get with the M2 is you can grab it by the scruff of the neck and drive it hard.

Traction control is indispensable in the wet!!!!!!!

It sounds epic to me ears ... better than both E46 and E92 M3 (probably not a popular opinion). OK ... the E92 might have sounded better in the last 750rpm but you never spent any time there on the road!

Nice, congrats. Good aren't they?

I got mine yesterday, 18 plate LCI manual in LBB with 1600 miles on the clock. I've only been for a brief drive of about 30 miles, but I'm loving it so far (had E36, E46 and E90 M3s previously).

Yeah, so far very impressed. I found myself laughing out loud at how good it was on a spirited drive today, other than my motorbikes the only thing that has made me feel like that was a previous Cayman S.

It's quite interesting to hear other people's opinions who have owned previous generation M cars!

Great great cars, underrated imo as the Competition is referred to as what the original car should have been. Unfair imo

I particularly like sport mode, boot it, back off. Crazy noises lol

Fully agree that the original M2 is unfairly now the "poor relation" to the Comp. When it came out it was named "a masterpiece" by all the mags, and then discarded like an unloved toy as soon as the Comp came along - journos eh!

I'm seriously considering getting one of these in the near future but have recently bought a 340i which I absolutely love, has anyone driven them both? just be interested in any comparisons (in terms of performance more than anything) mine has the obligatory MPPSK power and noise kit so 360HP 500NM Torque, So is bloody quick and sounds fantastic.. Obviously the M2 will be a lot more agile and being such a short wheelbase and obviously has all the M bits, must be like driving a very fast go cart, probably need to drive one to see what all the fuss is about, the looks of them are seriously growing on me.

I’ve just picked up a 67 plate Mineral Grey, fully loaded with the M-Performance parts including Exhaust and interior upgrades. Collected yesterday, had a 240 mile journey back and managed around 32mpg average which I thought was great.

Tried the valves opened for some of the country lanes near home, OMG we were giggling like school kids with the pops and crackles on the over run and down shifts! So addictive!

Coming from an S2000 it’s a huge step up! I should have changed sooner! smile Also tried the M140 which I enjoyed, but it lacked something, the M2 feels so much more alive.

Not a straight forward comparison, but I went from a 640d to an M2 Comp, so somewhat similar to your situation. The M2 is an absolute riot. Coming from a diesel, the way the M2 revs our is properly exhilarating, and the whole car just feels like it’s ready to go at any moment, which is a feeling I never got from my 6 series. Your 340i will have more power and way lighter than my 640d ever was, so might not feel as big as a jump for you, but I highly recommend it!

Traction mode is the best for the pops and bangs. Manual mode, the noise on the overrun is insane. Almost anti social.....almost. I love mine. Enjoy smile

Perhaps it's just me but i was disappointed in mine, in fact I ended up hating it and couldn't wait to get shot.
It looked good and handled well but I just couldn't stand the engine, I guess we're just all different.

Oddly that’s what I find endearing about the M2. Unlike other modern M cars, it isn’t just an engine bolted to a chassis designed to deal with power. Very well balanced little cat that engages the driver on a lot more levels
