Just a bit of a rant

We are getting an increased volume of lying cold callers all with the same SP

I called you last week / month to about XYZ (usually council tax, utilities, phone, advertising etc) the truth is they have not called you before but are trying to get to the person who deals with whatever they are trying to flog you.

Why do they think if they start of by lying to you that you would want to do business with them! I really think it is a crazy way to try and get business.

The ones that really piss me off claim to be from HMRC, they leave a message, which most others don't, that I must contact them urgently over some tax anomaly and if I don't then I could end up in court. Yet no communication from HMRCs normal channels - email + secure message by Gov Gateway or a good old letter. W*nkers.

We get them knock on our door.

"We are doing some work in the village"

"No you're not"

"We want to apologise for the noise"

"There is no noise"

"While I'm here I notice you have wooden facia boards, can I give you a quote to replace them"

"No you can't"

or

"I am on probation and my boss is expecting me to get some more work for him"

"Get another job "

And they are usually the same people coming back time after time, as if we wouldn't notice.

Cold callers looking to do work on the house get told we rent.

More annoying are recruitment consultants calling me, claiming to be working with colleagues (which they aren't, just use the name) and then try offering me someone to work for me after more per hour than I'm on

Best one ever though was:

Hello, we help businesses with all their digital marketing needs

No thanks, we're all covered

We do email marketing, web design and HDD

What's HDD?

Umm, it's computers and stuff

Haha. Don't you think you should find out what you're selling before you pick up the phone

Um, yes.

Bye

I'll never forget that 'Um, its computers and stuff line hehe

The phone system we use filters out most indirect marketing but a few get through, if not busy at work then I'll string them along and then transfer them to a colleague so they can do the same.

One recent tactic that's being used is spurious FOI requests looking for sales leads, we had one which wanted to know what card access we had a work, how many doors and type etc.

We're with Talk Talk and they have a call screening service which is fantastic. I have not had a cold call since we started using it. I don't think it costs any extra either, so may be worth looking into.

When people call our landline they have to say their name and then we get the call and can decide whether to accept it or not. If its a number we recognise and accept, then their calls will come straight through in future. I just remembered that you can manually enter via the Talk Talk website the numbers that can come straight through.

I think cold callers don't bother trying to get screened and just move onto the next mug.

The poor salesman had probably just been walked through their ‘training session’ that morning and didn’t have a clue. Just “hit the phones”!

I get loads of cold calls to my business number, it drives me mad. I usually ask who's calling and then "accidentally" cut off the call when I'm putting it through (to myself...).

My favourite by far was the charity that phoned. When I asked who it was and what it was concerning, they told me they were a charity and that I'd promised them a donation. Now that's lying - suffice it to say they're getting nothing out of me ever again.

I have a secret confession....if I’m working from home I’m usually bored and procrastinating so I enjoy wasting my time and theirs....telling them they have a nice voice, asking them if they’re married, asking them what clothes they’re wearing, telling them I’m in a onesie......

My absolute biggest hate is the "we're calling to confirm the renewal of your advert in the local anti-bullying campaign magazine"

Or similar.

I did that when I was a part-time shelf stacker. It was the "your computer has a virus" ones that got the worst of it. After 20 minutes stringing the minion along I eventually had the supervisor swearing at me (I was playing them along but I certainly wasn't abusive).

Made me wonder if these fraudsters calling from certain parts of the world actually realise what they're doing or just following a script.

Coming from the other side of the sales fences. I never use this line unless I have actually spoken to the person before.

It's always best, to be honest about what you're doing it might take longer to get the right person but you build better relationships in the long run. I can't stand lazy salespeople who don't put the work in.

Well you guys shouldn't be so difficult to get hold of. Just pick up the phone and spare us a brief chat. You never know, we may be able to help your business wink.

I don't like lying though.

That looks a lot like one of those old 'landline phones'. I haven't had one plugged in for over a decade, am amazed people still use landlines for calls when every man and his dog has a mobile. I only have the landline for fibre and it's great for 'sinkholing' where I have to give a phone number for something but I never want to take a call from the person or company I've given it to.. With no phone plugged in I imagine the call must just ring on forever (I don't have voicemail on there - or my mobile for that matter).
