My wife called me this morning saying that when she had just parked the car up it was making a clunking and grinding sound and then wouldn't steer. Called AA for recovery.

It was on level 4 of a multistory!

AA guy quickly sees the power steering motor is dislodged. He pushes it back in and wraps some cable ties round it to get it out the car park.

Bolts have sheared off the motor.

Now at BMW to get looked at

Car is 4 years and 1 month old with 32000 miles.

Unlucky and this is general wear and tear or a defect?

BMW have issued a recall for this as the bolts holding the motor to the rack can shear - that's what's happened to yours. eek

I would insist on a new rack.

BMW: another week, another recall. Just a joke now. laugh

I saw the earlier reply about cost, and yeah, £1100 for the part is what im seeing!

I've also read it needs coded to the car?

Can i ask where you seen anything about a recall?

A mate who is a main dealer tech. It's not widely publicised but a certain series of cars are being fixed FOC.

A used rack isn't much:

About 2 hours to fit and code to the car.

I'll be having a go myself with a used rack if I get no joy from BMW. Will need to fit it with some proper bolts though!

Just not sure how hard I should push BMW with the car being 4 years old. I don't think it should be failing at that age/mileage. There is another 2014 car on babybmw forum that had the same problem last month.

And it looks like the 3 series uses the same rack/motor - although these are mostly in the US -

Looks like this could be a growing problem?

UPDATE

Just had a call from the dealer. Car has been fixed free of charge - They contact BMW who said it was covered by the Quality Enhancement programme.

I was expecting a fight, so credit where it's due - great service from Douglas Park BMW in Stirling.

I think it probably should be a full on recall from BMW though.

100% should be a recall. This happened with early Mini's (R53), AFAIK I think someone died as a result of their power steering failing. Recall was issued AFAIK, but it shows the danger of this. BMW really need to sort something out for this. However, likely that it affects only a certain amount of VIN's.

Had a bit of a moment when i went to colect it.....

Service desk returned my keys saying the 'repair kit' as per quality enhancement had been fitted.

Hold on.... I ask does the repair kit mean just new bolts have been fitted. Yes is the answer. st! There were definite metal filings on the undertray from the gear in the motor. (I guess from the grinding as it came loose).

I ask to speak to a tech or mechanic who has worked on it. He confirms it's a whole new rack fitted. Phew.

Quick look under the bonnet confirms.

So yes, a good result considering I thought I'd have an expensive repair, but it really shouldn't be happening in the first place.

Again, credit to Douglas Park for sorting it quickly and effortlessly.

BMW are known for making everything an option. Why should quality be any different, it's part of the Quality Enhancement Pack.
