Watch out estate agents, Tescos has plans!!

I know it seems like Tesco are taking over and have more of our high street than ever, but they are still not one of the top 5 food retailers in the world, and their profits are tiny in comparrison with the banks and oil companies. Suppliers are being hit but they're not that big just yet and this decision might just wake up a few estate agents.

Largest company on earth at the start of this year - Wal Mart with worldwide sales in excess of $256bn in 2003. 5000 stores worldwide and 8 out of 10 US households shop there.
Tescos is going but one way and thats after Wal Mart.
They are looking at a lot of options I imagine and being run by the quality of director that they seem to be they cant go far wrong in any sector.
Utter bo***x.
Who is going to price the house?, who is going to handle negotiations? etc etc etc.
It is merely a form of advertising homes for sale privatly, with all the pitfalls that entails.
It may close down the crappy private sale websites, but is unlikely to affect professional estate agents.
It could however seriously affect the value of used mini's

Since when has there been any logic in pricing houses? Pick a number out of the hat. You only have to see Property Ladder when they drag round 3 "professional" estate agents and get a 25% spread.
As for negotiations - dont make me laugh. If you want to negotiate the most effective way is to talk to the seller directly. Sit down over a cup of tea and come up with a price rather than going through all the hassle of middlemen.
The only thing an Estate Agent can do is advertise your property, but with the march of the Internet that distribution method is becoming outdated.
Why wander round countless estate agents when you can sit at home at your leisure and look around several websites without being molested.
When you find properties that match your specifications - you can then start all the time consuming stuff.
Tescos are merely going to provide another internet portal.
Firstly I am not an Estate agent.
I do though through my business have daily contact with them and the misconception that people have about them is in the main, caused by a few bad apples and media hype as usual. A good estate agent is worth the fee a poor one is not worth a penny as with most service industies.
Tesco will undoubtably introduce some form of self selling via its website but who will progress the sale,chase people up etc which is the agents job. More and more people are pushing themselves to their stress limits at work and dont want the hassle of chasing up x,y and z.
Leave the poor estate agents alone and lets pick on the biggest winner in the property market... Tony and his cronies.

I don't have a lot of respect for estate agenting as a "profession". It needs to have proper qualifications and standards of conduct.
As for pricing...last time we had our house valued there was more than £150,000 variation between the top and the bottom valuations.
Picking a number out of a hat would inded be more accurate...

I posted this a while ago. I think the inexorable march of tesco is something to be very concerned about.

That was undoubtedly not a professional, merely an amature attempting to guess what you were thinking in order to gain your instructions, a professional will tell you what he thinks it will fetch and will be able to support his opinion. It is a fact that most people have a distorted view of what some one will pay for their home, and they don't like being told the truth. As I said earlier, the big boys jumped on the estate agency bandwagon once before and abandoned ship (I like mixing my metaphors) when times got a little rough.
